Cannot send emails from Outlook or iPad

Up to 24/1/2023 no problem sending btinternet emails from within MS Outlook or iPad. Then MS Outlook keeps on asking me for username and password, and iPad reports "Cannot find" despite the fact that both machines are accepting emails OK. I've changed passwords on both, and MS Outlook briefly worked fine. But now I am back to square one. Same error messages. Throughout this time, I can both send and receive emails via the BT webmail and app. Now I have just received a message "BT account settings are out of date". What has changed?
