EMail gone missing

Hi all! Received an email a few days ago, read it and left it in my inbox. Went back today to look at it and it wasn't there. Senders can't delete an email once it's been read, can they?

Re: EMail gone missing

Some email systems allow the sender to "recall" a sent email but this would normally also generate a message saying they have done that. It is usually only possible to use that feature for a very short period after the email was sent.

Have you checked your Trash folder to see if its there?

Do you access your email on more than one device, and if you do have you checked on that device.

Re: EMail gone missing

Thanks for your quick reply. Answers are yes, yes and yes but missing from all devices (iPhone 8, Macbook Pro and iPad). I forwarded it to a friend and it appears in that sent message but the original has gone. As you say, I know that you can have a brief option to "undo" an email but this was sent from an official organisation and had been on my device/web for a few hours. Just curious if there was a known bug eg with Apple devices and if anyone else had seen the phenomenon?

Re: EMail gone missing

I am assume that you use an email app on your iPhone and iPad and may also use an email app on your Macbook.

Have you checked your email by logging onto your email account using a web browser (webmail) to see if the email is there in any of your folders?  I suspect it won't be if you have set up your email apps as IMAP accounts but it may be worth a check.

If it is only one email that has gone missing from the inbox and assuming that you did not delete it by accident, in which case it should be in the Trash folder, other than what I have posted I can not think of anything else to have caused this other than somebody has access to your email account and deleted the email and removed it from the Trash folder.

Re: EMail gone missing

Again, thanks for your quick reply and sage advice. I've checked all the things you mention - I've always assumed that you can't change/delete the Webmail emails/folders other than by using the Webmail in a browser but if it's setup as an IMAP account (which it is), perhaps using a third-party app will delete the "master" email as well? Should still show up in Trash though...? It's not the end of the World (this time) and will be logged in the large space in my head called "Unknown/Don't Understand/Too Difficult" which is rapidly getting bigger.....

Re: EMail gone missing

There is no master/slave, everything is always in sync with IMAP, whatever you do on one device or webmail is replicated on all devices/webmail.

Re: EMail gone missing

If a folder has been deleted it will be in the Trash folder but may not show. You need to log onto your account via webmail then go to the Trash folder and if there is an arrow beside the folder click on the arrow and it will reveal the folder in Trash. No arrow,no folder.
