In my list of emails, in and sent. Why am I getting a solid black circle with a white number in it - 01, 02, sometimes 03. Alongside the 'paperclip' symbol?

It is because you are using the "Conversation View".

Log onto your email account and click on the "change view" button at the right hand side. Once you have done that SINGLE click on the "conversation view". This toggles the view on/off.

This should stop your emails that you are grouped together because you have been corresponding with a person using the "reply to" function.
