Re: How do I delete a deceased person's email account?

Sorry, I've only just seen this.  I have sent BT a message through Facebook and they may be able to deal with it although they don't seem to understand it's just the email account that needs to be deleted.  Everything else has been transferred to my name.

Re: How do I delete a deceased person's email account?

Hi @Jillity

Thanks for posting back!

I'm really sorry for the distress this is causing you and fully understand how difficult things are for you at the moment even without this added pressure.  Keep us posted how things go with my colleagues and if you do need our help you know where we are.

Cheers,

Robbie

@Matt-Swrote:

@Jillity

We will need to take this one in to have a look at to see if we can delete the account for you. I've sent you a Private Message with details on how you can get in contact with the mod team.

Thanks

Matt

Please be very, very careful with this. BT have a specialist team that deals with bereavement - it's not the "account" that needs deleting, but the email address associated with the account.

My friend has deleted all the emails permanently but she says she will forward the next one to me.  I don't think she knows how to find out where the emails are coming from but if she sends them to me I will find out and will stop them.

I'm so sorry to hear of the problem and stress it's causing.

Unfortunately as gg30340 says, scammers may well have the account email address and associated contacts. They spoof the email address sending "from", which may not actually be the correct email address. I get spam emails pretending to be from people I know, but the email address they are pretending to be sent from is not the actual email address of my contact. Just that the name is the same.

You can actually set any name against an email address.

I'm afraid there is frankly nothing that can be done to prevent scammers doing this, but hopefully as time goes on - they may reduce, but the ones I've seen are simply spam emails linking to potential dodgy sites - meaning the scammers don't know who's responding.

There may be more causing more upset and stress, but perhaps a chat with your friends about the circumstances and emails that may still arise could be very useful.

Naturally any received pretending to be from your late husband should be deleted and not read or any links clicked.

Re: How do I delete a deceased person's email account?

Thgank you for your reply.  All I wanted to do was to remove the email address.  That has now been done via Messenger.

I filter the emails from scammers.  I very rarely get them.
