How do I stop BT Yahoo auto-forwarding emails?

Go to solution

Can anyone help. How do I stop BT Yahoo forwarding all my emails to a gmail account.

I don't know how or why or when it was set up to do this. Not by me.

I now get lots of Mailer Daemon failed delivery messages saying that emails I received OK a few hours earlier could not be received by this Gmail account.

Replying here to my own question.

I switched to Basic view, and found I could switch off forwarding from there.

Hi.

If you didn't recognise the gmail account in the forwarding section, then your account has been compromised. So if you've not done so, change the password asap.

Thank you Andy. I have changed the password, but the worrying thing is that I only spotted the problem once I received the failed delivery messages, which is a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted (and emails sent to me are no longer getting through to the forwarded email address).

Is there any way of knowing how long this forwarding address had been set up for? In other words, how long might someone (e.g. Freddy Fraudster) have had access to all my emails?

I would have thought it would be sensible for the system to send a message, if a new forwarding address is set up on any account, or perhaps a text to the registered phone number??

There is virtually no way of knowing when it was set up, unless you can recall when you suddenly didn't receive any emails.

I agree with the other point about sending a message to a registered phone number if the forwarding is set up. It's nearly always the other way around only - in that if a forwarding address is setup, that address has to acknowledge that it's valid.

You can see why, since the expectation is that the original address has been logged in correctly - and assumed to be by the correct owner. Some systems do send notifications that a change has been made to the original account.

Re: How do I stop BT Yahoo auto-forwarding emails?

Thanks again Andy. My email was compromised a few weeks ago. Fortunately I discovered this fairly quickly, changed the password and regained control of the account. As far as I know, no damage was done. But I didn't realise that - presumably Freddy Fraudster - had set up this auto-forwarding address, so although I had the account back, I didn't realise that all emails sent to me were being forwarded to an unknown email address - until they started to be rejected and I received the Mailer Daemon failed delivery messages.

I suppose the moral of this is that I should have checked all the settings once I had recovered the email account. But I never even knew that it was possible to set up auto-forwarding, and because I use an email app (Apple Mail) to compose and view messages, I was not very familiar with the Webmail interface anyway.

I'm not sure what the answer to this is - always be vigilant I suppose - and I hope I've learnt a lesson. Be more careful in future.

See link about what checks you should carry out if your email account has been compromised.
