Having set up my new PC I am trying to retrieve Inbox email than has 'gone missing' following replacing my PC and updating to Windows 11 + Outlook 365.
My previous PC has since failed completely, but my laptop is now only showing Inbox Email since 26/11/22 ( same as the new PC). That means I cannot access a lot of business history etc.
How can I recover my previous email inbox content for the last 12months or so?
did you set up the email as IMAP or POP3? IMAP should bring all the old stuff.
Are you a business user, as this is the residential customer forum?
I suspect that all your old mail had been downloaded and stored on your faulty PC, so unless you have previously made a recent backup (system image) of that old PC, your old mail has now gone.
If its still on the server, then as @gspearson has suggested, setup your new PC email as IMAP.
If your old PC had been configured as POP3 without the 'leave a copy of the message on the server' option ticked, it would have downloaded the mail and removed it from the server.
If your old PC used an earlier version of Outlook, it may be possible to extract the .PST file from the hard drive.
Keith... (and @gspearson) thank you for your advice, I checked and my current 'BTinternet' email address is set up as an IMAP/SMTP set up . I work from home, but am in the process of retiring from my 'one man' consultancy work.
Fortunately, in the last few days I have been able to bring my old PC back to life , and although still not fully functional, I can access Outlook and can again see my last 2/3years 'inbox' and 'sent' email for reference from there. Looking at that original Outlook account it is named as xxxxx @ (which I have only just noticed).
At the top of the Outlook list of folders is named > xxxxxx btinternet.com(8) and below that I can the usual current folders. i.e. Inbox, Sent etc and access the emails .... is there a way that I can transfer those folders such as back them up on a USB memory stick ?
PS: I am very grateful for any further advice (and happy to make a donation to a charity of your choice).
I'm not quite sure what you are trying to do. If you were using IMAP in your old machine everything in that profile should appear in your new (eventually)(not absolutely sure). I moved to 365 a couple of years ago and can see messages back to at least 2014. You might also see them by going to your BT Mail
The files are different between the two Outlooks:
You might find either a .pst file or an .ost file in our old machine - it's hidden but once you have it, probably a good idea to copy it to a stick and put it in a file in your new. At least then you have an option to import - probably getting hundreds of duplicates.
When it works, it is magic, but otherwise...
