Why does BT keep asking me repeatedly to enter a much longer password than I have ever entered to get into my emails when I try to link them to my phone for example

Are you saying that you are seeing the password entry field with more "stars" than your password contains? If so, that's a security feature rather than asking you to fill in that amount of characters.
