I was about to post a similar question concerning receiving email while abroad, but I seem to have found a solution, very much assisted by this thread, so I thought I would post it in case it helped others.
I've moved to China and since being here I've not be able to receive BT emails, although I have been able to send them. I use a MacBook Pro and two iPhones, with either Mail or Outlook, through wi-fi and data, and with and without a VPN. Nothing worked. The webmail is fine so there's nothing wrong with the account.
Then I tried fixing the VPN on a UK server (I'm using VPNExpress) and bingo - down they all came. It seems that outgoing mail can go via any server, but incoming must be via a UK address. Not that I know what I'm talking about, I just tinkered until it worked...
I hope you are paying for Premium mail otherwise your email address may be suddenly deleted if it is not associated with a broadband account.
