Re: Problems with BT Mail on an iPad

I have just spent two days trying to sort this out. I can access my email using webmail via MyBT using my MacPro web browser and my laptop using Windows web browser. But - cannot set up email on Windows laptop using Outlook, nor on my wife's iPad and iPhone  6. I cannot access email through webmail using the iPad web browser.

I have had three online chats today with BT - no joy. Have also had MicroSoft taking over my computer but, again, with no joy even with a tech wizard having a go!!! BT says it is an MS problem, MS say it is a BT server problem!!!!

All my settings and passwords are correct.

Re: Problems with BT Mail on an iPad

I have moved you onto your own thread because the one you posted on was over four years old.

Are you on the BTYahoo or BTMail system. If you are not sure, if you log onto webmail and look at the BT logo. If it shows Yahoo, you are on the BTYahoo system.

When you say you are using the correct settings what settings are you using?

The following guides use the BTMail settings. If you are still on the BTYahoo system you could try using the Yahoo settings if the BTMail ones don't work.

Yahoo IMAP settings

https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN4075.html

Yahoo POP Settings

https://uk.help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN4724.html

Ipad/iPhone set up:- Delete any previous email set up and re-start your phone/iPad. Do not let the phone set up automatically. Use the manusl set up.

Go to your iPhone home screen and tap Settings.

Scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

Tap Add Account.

Scroll down and tap Other.

Tap Add Mail Account.

Put the name you want people to see when they get mail from you in the Name field.

Enter your username in the Address field. For example, firstname.lastname@btinternet.com

Enter your password in the Password field.

In the Description field enter the name you want to use to identify the account.

Tap Next. If you get an error message at this point, tap OK.

Make sure that IMAP is selected at the top of the screen.

In the Incoming Mail Server section, change the Host Name to mail.btinternet.com

Now enter 993 in the Server port and set SSL to on.

Then scroll down to the Outgoing Mail Server section and change the Host Name to mail.btinternet.com

Now enter 465 in the Server port and set SSL to on.

Make sure the correct username and password are entered.

Tap Save.

Your settings will now be verified and you'll then see your Account screen. If this doesn’t happen automatically tap your account to access your email.

To set up an account on Outlook use the manual set up, not the wizard and use the following settings:

Your Name

Email address: Full btinternet email address

Account type: IMAP or  (POP)

Incoming server: mail.btinternet.com

Outgoing server: mail.btinternet.com

Logon information:

User name: prefix only of email address

Password: Email password

Tick remember password

Do not tick Require password auth (SPA)

Click Button More settings

Tick box my out going server requires authentication

Tick box use same as incoming

Do not tick log onto incoming server

Advanced Button

Incoming server 993 or (POP 995) Tick requires SSL

Outgoing server 465 Use following type encryption SSL

Re: Problems with BT Mail on an iPad

Thanks for the info. I have tried all this, as did the MS guy using remote control. No joy. But, I will try again and let you know what happens.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

For anyone else viewing, never ever let anyone take over your computer, even so called specialists.

They won't talk to each other, as there is nothing specifically to sort out - it's usually one of a couple of things, old settings not working any more or server access failure. It can be interference from security packages or even poor systems updates.

Have a close read through of gg30340's excellent post - which gives the best details.

Please be aware that if you've changed password, or told to, fairly often these get out of sync in MyBT and email - and the old password can still work in apps/clients. If you are changing password, make sure at least 15 minutes elapse before trying apps/clients - which can mean turning off any that check every few minutes.

If you are with BTYahoo, then try :-

https://mail.yahoo.com

to login, this can kickstart apps/clients.

Re: Problems with BT Mail on an iPad

I shall go through this methodically, so please be patient as I take each line of your advcie and show what happned:

Are you on the BTYahoo or BTMail system. If you are not sure, if you log onto webmail and look at the BT logo. If it shows Yahoo, you are on the BTYahoo system.

I am on BT email, not Yahoo or Yahoo BT

When you say you are using the correct settings what settings are you using?

My password, and stmp settings: mail.btinternet.com for both in and out

The following guides use the BTMail settings. If you are still on the BTYahoo system you could try using the Yahoo settings if the BTMail ones don't work.

Yahoo IMAP settings

https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN4075.html

Yahoo POP Settings

https://uk.help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN4724.html

Not applicable

When I try to set up Outlook I end up receiving a message that says:

Something went wrong

The connection to the incoming (IMAP) server was dropped. Please check the incoming (IMAP) server settings and try again.

So, I try again, and again and again. Contact BT, three times - no joy there other than they say it is a MS Outlook problem. Contact MS and someone from there takes control and tries, ony to end up saying it is a BT server problem!!

I have tried using the manual set up but get the same message.

Ipad/iPhone set up:- Delete any previous email set up and re-start your phone/iPad. Do not let the phone set up automatically. Use the manusl set upemail.

I won't go throuhg this line by line - sufficent to say that I have tried all that you have suggested but still end up at the same point - after trying to Verify a message saying 'Cannot Get Mail. The username or password for mail.btinternet.com is incorrect.' But I have the correct username and password.

Re: Problems with BT Mail on an iPad

As I mentioned in my previous post, did you change password recently to try to alleviate the problem?

If so, try the old password (in one device) and see what happens.

Re: Problems with BT Mail on an iPad

Just to double check.. Are you using the correct ports. Outlook sets up with the default ports. You need to make sure that ports 993 and 465 with SSL are being used.
