Both my wife and I have had this problem and still have it when using our laptop.
Yet bizarrely, if we save the email to Drafts and then go onto our iPads, the email is sent without any problem.
It is clear from reading this thread that BT have no explanation for it whatsoever.
Neither of us use a VPN, and we have tried shutting down the laptop completely and rebooting it. Still the same problem.
Its extremely annoying and inconvenient.
If BT cannot come up with a fix, I will not be renewing the contract with them when the time comes.

Sorry that you're getting this error. Are you using a mail client and if so have you tried sending the email via Webmail to see if that works ok or you get the same error?
Does this error occur with all emails you try to send or just some?
Yes I am using web mail and it happens with every email I try to send.
it started out of the blue about 4 to 5 days ago.
I don’t use a VPN and nor does my wife.
