Why does BT keeping locking my account and telling me “someone tried to access your … email account without your permission”. There’s no indication this is really happening. I’m abroad and using a vpn (not a uk server) so I suppose that could be something to do with it. But it’s tiresome and a big waste of time having to reset my password, update apps and email clients every couple of days. Can I do anything to stop this?
(Edit) Now, trawling through the messages, I see several others have reported similar problems, though nothing came up when I searched. The answers all point to BT taking exception to vpn servers. This is all very well, but if the effect is to discourage people from using a vpn for security while travelling then BT’s precautions will have the opposite effect from what they intend.
And it’s a right pain.
BT do not take exception to VPNs but they do take exception to multiple changes of IP addresses from the same account.
When you use a VPN it can indicate that they are possibly using blacklisted IP addresses and or are coming from many different countries which can tend to indicate the email is possibly coming from a spammers account or a hacked email account and as such it gets blocked until it is verified by the owner of the account.
