Spam emails

Go to solution

Like most people I am getting a huge amount of spam/bogus emails, 25-30 per day, and my filters delete some but not all, and can generally quickly scan through the senders addresses to delete the rubbish. I am puzzled why the BT Yahoo mail system allows me to see messages where there is no sender information visible, surely these should be prohibited from being received in the first place, why isn't more being done to combat this menace?

Re: Spam emails

There is no BTYahoo email system. BT parted from Yahoo in 2013. If you still use BT for your email it is a BTMail email account.

The email address that you see or do not see is chosen by the sender and has nothing to do with BT and is irrelevant to the sending/receiving of the email. The true email address which is used for sending is shown in the email headers which you can view by clicking on "More" in the menu bar above the list of emails then going to "View Source".

Where do you get your information "Like most people I am getting a huge amount of spam/bogus emails, 25-30 per day," .  I occasionally get one or two spam emails a week.

The BTMail spam filters can be poor and slow to catch up with the spammers but to help the filters you should not open suspected spam emails, doing so can alert the spammer that they have a live email account. You should never "unsubscribe" from any emails that you never signed up to in the first place for the same reason and you should, if the spam emails have reached your Inbox mark them as spam.

Re: Spam emails

There are many reports of a recent surge in spam. For me, this started a couple of months ago, but only to my g-mail account, whilst my BT accounts are fine. It all depends on which e-mail address is being circulated by the spammers. In g-mail it's easy to filter these by setting to delete them, and not even send them to the spam folder.

Re: Spam emails

Thanks for your reply. Many friends & relatives I talk to are receiving far more spam/phishing emails recently. I personally never open or click on any messages with addresses that are clearly spam or not recognised. But that's the whole point, what legitimate reason is there for there to be no sender's address immediately visible, and why are these messages even allowed to pass through. It is akin to having to answer a phone call and the caller refusing to say who it is.

Thanks  for this reply -I'm having the same problem.

Having gone to "View Source" I can see that there is an email address in "Return-path". How can I then use block sender or block domain to prevent future spam from that source as these options are greyed out ?

Re: Spam emails

Log onto your BTMail account using a browser, not an email client/app, and then click on your username at the right hand side. Select "Settings" then go to the left hand side and select "Mail". Scroll down and click on "Blocked Senders".

Once there add the address or domain and click Save.
