Suspended or Deleted email addresses

Hi Community,

We only maintain mailboxes that are in active use, so it is important if you have a BT email address that you use it regularly.

If there has been no activity on an email address for 90 days then we will suspend the account without notice.  You will have a further 60 days to reactivate the account, but after that the email address will be deleted and we will not be able to recover the mailbox or its content. To reactivate your account you can follow the instructions from here, How to reactivate your BT Email address.

To make sure we can tell that you are active, please access your email using one of the methods below – this is especially important if you have been suspended for inactivity but are using your mailbox regularly.

Methods of access that demonstrate activity

  • Log-in via webmail
  • Log-in using the recommended IMAP settings
  • Log-in using the recommended POP3 settings
  • Log-in using the recommended SMTP settings

The settings are listed below so you don’t have to hunt for them.

IMAP Settings:

  • Incoming Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com
  • Port: 993 (this should be automatically populated by selecting the SSL encryption)
  • SSL Encryption: Enabled (but not STARTTLS)
  • Username: your email address including the @btinternet or @btopenworld.com par
  • Password: your btinternet or btopenworld password
  • Root folder/path:
  • Folder separator: . (full stop)

Please do NOT enable "secure password authentication" (SPA). It's not needed when you use SSL encryption and won't work.

If your IMAP client supports it, we recommend you also set up the following folders:

Trash
Sent Items
Drafts

POP3 settings  (We only recommend POP3 if you use a single device):

  • Port: 995 (this should be automatically populated by selecting the SSL encryption)
  • Incoming Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com
  • SSL Encryption: Enabled (but not STARTTLS)
  • Username: your email address including the @btinternet.com or @btopenworld.com part
  • Password: your btinternet or btopenworld password
  • POP from folder: by default, POP will pull emails from your inbox

 SMTP settings:

  • Outgoing Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com
  • Port: 465 (this may not be automatically populated on selecting SSL, so you'll need to check)
  • SSL Encryption: Enabled (but not STARTTLS)
  • Authentication: PLAIN
  • Username: your email address including the @btinternet or @btopenworld.com part
  • Password: your btinternet or btopenworld password

We don’t consider auto-forwarding email as an indication that the account is in use, so to avoid your mailbox being suspended please log-in regularly using one of the above.

Thanks

DanielS
