@IT doesn't matter how you access your @btinternet.com email address, if you are no longer a BT customer it will stop so be prepared to lose it. 


Actually it seems that you can keep the email address if you login to it at least once every 30 days

From the terms and conditions.

 

For customers who cease Broadband service after 1 July 2013

14. If you have ceased your broadband service you will be able to continue to use your email account for a period of 30 days only, after which we will end your email account(s) or products without notice. This means any data held in the account will be deleted. If you wish to keep your email account you may do so by moving to the BT Premium Mail service before the 30 days has expired.

Looks as though the online 'help' is out-of-date. There's a big difference between:

 

'we will end your email account(s) or products without notice' and

 

'If you don't use your email account for 30 days or more, we may end it.'
