Re: Windows Mail - Server Terminating Connection when downloading mail with attachments

Re entry from Beckysoot:

The point I was making is that I have two email accounts, only one is having this problem.   Both use BT and therefore only some accounts / mail servers are affected. .  I am only seeing the problem on one acount despite using the same email client (Outlook Express) and having all the settings the same and using the same computer and broadband connection.   I am able therefore to manually forward emails from the failing account using the web mail access to the other account and these then download ok.

Re: Windows Mail - Server Terminating Connection when downloading mail with attachments

Has anyone noticed that attachments that were sent individually with an email turn up zipped when you download them direct from webmail?  Has Yahoo started to zip up attachments automatically, thus making one big 5Mb attachment out of 10 half-meg photos?  Does this change the way our Outlook programmes see the attachments to the extent that they can't deal with them.  In other words is Yahoo making our email indigestible?

This is now causing me a major problem - as a business customer I expect better from my ISP.  I just have not got time to mess around with the BT helpline when I know many others have the same problem.

Can we please have an answer on this forum from BT????  Thanks

Re: Windows Mail - Server Terminating Connection when downloading mail with attachments

Welsh flyer, I have had this problem as well.

Current work round is to logon to BTYahoo and move any mail with attachments 10MB and over to another folder, this will then allow others to download to MSOutlook, usually.

There are far too many people suffering this problem for it to be anything other than a BT/Yahoo issue. See my reply on other post suggestinghow long before  BBC Watchdog get hold of this issue.

Re: Windows Mail - Server Terminating Connection when downloading mail with or without attachments

I have had problems with email in Outlook 7 over the last few days, with or without attachments, whereby it freezes after either a send or receive, and I have to use task manager to get Outlook to shut down.  I also at times need to save attachments to Word, and this has been taking longer and longer.   I regularly housekeep the account so it is not because of too many folders etc.  I have also had problems with internet explorer dropping out, and I wonder if this is connected.  I access a hosted server and this works fine and speeds are also good so it is not per se the connection to the exchange, I am also close to the exchange.  My speeds test fine, and my email checks come back ok except for one occasion when I got the error code 0x800ccc67.  I have downloaded an upgrade to Explorer 8, and extended the time out on email to 10 minutes as suggested on a forum but it still does it.   I work on XP SP3.

I have ticked "email me when someone replied" - but may not receive it!

The Outlook freezing issue is actually another thing entirely.  For this you need a Microsoft FixIt : MicrosoftFixit 50036, from the Microsoft site:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/959632

This should sort out the freeze problem, then see if you have the attachment download problem too.

Good luck

Re: Windows Mail - Server Terminating Connection when downloading mail with or without attachments

I am now on my second email of complaint to BT regarding this issue.  An extract from their latest response is as follows:

"First of all, thank you for your email. I can certainly understand that a problem like this can cause frustration and inconvenience and I’m very sorry.

I have checked and I can see that a fault has been raised and is currently under investigation by our BT Yahoo Tier 3 email specialists. I am sorry that I do not have further information on this fault for you.  I can assure you that our forums are constantly monitored"

What really frustrates me is that the only updates I am getting for a fault that is apparently (from these forums) affecting loads of users and has been logged for a few weeks is this.  Clearly something has been changed on the mail servers and they are unable to roll back.

I am now at a loss as to how to escalate this.

Re: Windows Mail - Server Terminating Connection when downloading mail with or without attachments

I wonder if the BBC Watchdog team can get an answer? This problem has gone on long enough. How many others, unwaware of this forum, are in the same boat?

It may be worth bypassing all the layers of management between helpdesk and the chairman and go straight to the top.

I think it is a general problem. I have been having this for the last few days, not just on the laptop, but on the Desk top as well.

I have just come back from an extended holiday abroad and am anxious to catch up with all my contacts. Each time I do receive emails, it is just the last two that came in repeated over and over again! What more can I do? Trying the email troubleshooting is also useless as it asks for a PC name and whatever I put in it says the name already exists! How do I find what my PC is named?

The repeating of the last two emails is because your email client is not terminating the download of the emails correctly.

You need to go into Webmail and remove the email with the largish attachment that is causing the failure to terminate.

The emai troubleshooter is unlikely to fix this type of problem.

To find the name of your computer go into Control Panel,  System, and then click on the Computer Name tab.  This is for XP, Vista and Windows 7 may be slightly different.

Re: Windows Mail - Server Terminating Connection when downloading mail with or without attachments

thanks for your reply, I have never had any problems until the Yahoo connectilon.   I did manage a whole day yesterday of non-freeze after eventually managing to find and download the fix, however today someone sent me a video clip and on trying to open the email in outlook, I got the egg timer until I signed off using task manager. I went into webmail to download and ultimately delete the email.   I really loath Yahoo, for one thing the adds drive me nuts and I have tried all sorts to get rid of them without success.

I have spent hours reading up on forums with fixes such as downloading firefox, greasemonkeys and all sorts of things, but they are all US sites, not sure if they apply to UK,  and quite techy, and I end up getting a headache
