archiving old emails to a pc

Hi all, first post so forgive any errors, please.

I used to archive my emails using http://uk.mg.bt.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Archive and have done so for years.

Today I got a 404 error message when I tried to connect and when I rang to find out why I have been advised that BT no longer offer this service.

I want to keep my correspondence (and must keep quite a large part for legal reasons) but do not want years of old folders on my page so does anyone know how to archive emails now, please?

Thanks

Re: archiving old emails to a pc

Yes you can do it, but you have to use an email client which supports IMAP.

I have Mozilla Thunderbird installed on my computer. It automatically syncs all of the Yahoo folders and keeps a local copy on your computer.

Within Thunderbird, there is an option to archive selected messages, to a local folder on your PC.

I have just tried it, and it works.

I can give you guidance if you wish, it does not delete any of the existing emails on Yahoo, unless you delete them from Thunderbird.

No problem at all Smiley Happy

I also use Firefox.

First go to http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/download

Install it, and start it up, but cancel any automatic e-mail configuration.

You need to go to this screen to setup the server. Put your email address in the bit that is blanked out.

Its fairly straightforward. By default, all folders are synched for offline access. But you can alter that.

There are lots of settings, just like Firefox. You can keep deleted e-mails on your local computer if you wish.

I hope you have an external backup drive should your computer ever go faulty.
