So can I know what the solution was. I am having exactly the same problem at the moment.
Just to let you know that I have seen your post and will reply tomorrow. That will give me time to re-visit the problem and find any notes I may still have. Briefly, the solution was initiated by changing the security question towards the end of the Account Profile details. I don't have time right now but will have a look in the morning.

I assume your problem is the same as in my post dated 25 June above and that you cannot change the password of the email address because the answer to the final security question has been forgotten.
Log in to MY BT using BT ID ( as an aside i used the same BT ID email address and password for both logging in to MY BT and the Prime email address.) In MY BT under "Your details" select "personal details" which brings up Your profile page containing 4 para. headings.
Go to the 4th Your security Question and Answer click on "edit security question and answer" and select another using letters only in the answer. Confirm password using the BT ID password for the user name in 2nd para. of profile.
You can now change the password to access the problem email account as the security question will be the new edited one
