so why does their suggested fix only work selectively for some and not others? Should they not say may rather than can?

Re: Are BT emails down
This thread has been very helpful, thank you! Knowing it's not just me has been reassuring. I can access my e-mail via smartphone if I switch off my Wi-Fi and also if I run under a VPN, as has been suggested, so that was very helpful.
I don't quite get the logic that I must switch off BT Broadband in order to use something else to access BT e-mail, but there you go 🙂
I know BT e-mail isn't an e-mail client and it appears to be a free 'add on' to Broadband, but I find it a very user-unfriendly product from the layout, to having to clear out cookies on my laptop (or hit the refresh button all the time) in order to avoid poor performance, to the inconsistent security policy that randomly stops me sending PDFs at certain times. I've been in contact with the tech help desk and even the level 2s don't always appear to be up-to-date with the current policies.
On a general point: I tried to renew my broadband recently and was disappointed with the lack of transparency in what is covered and what isn't. E-mail appears to be an 'add on' which is probably why the front end is flaky, landline is now an 'add on', and they couldn't even tell me if my previously free access to TNT via the app would be continued. It seems as if they will have to come and install a new box because they insist we all have to have Halo 3 now. I'm hoping this will be a pain-free experience. Having said that I find the actual broadband service is pretty reliable so I'm sticking with it for the moment.

Not being on the BT mobile network I can not test this but it may be that people using the their mobile phone on the BT mobile network or those using the BTMail app will find it will not work while those using a different mobile network and or a different email client/app finds it does works.

Yes. email.bt.com has disappeared from the DNS resolution services overnight.

Re: Are BT emails down
It's not just BT mail that's a problem it more BT broadband infrastructure that's a problem. I have tried to access a number of Web pages that have not been accessible until I turn WiFi off and use 4g.

thanks, doesn't work through vodafone
Presumably you are using the Vodafone mobile network and not your BT network via wifi.
Are you using the BTMail app, if so try another app.
Are you using webmail (using a browser) if not, try using one.
