I receive a large amount of spam email, much of it mentioning McAfee. I’ve tried setting up an email rule to automatically move these messages to my Deleted folder, but the rule never works.
Over a year ago I successfully set up a rule using other keywords to move emails to the Spam folder, and that rule still works fine. However, I’ve consistently had problems with filter rules for certain words, including this one. The same issue often occurs when I try to automatically move specific emails to Spam.
The rule I’m trying to use is:
If subject contains “mcafee”, move to folder Trash
I’ve also tried manually clicking Spam on certain emails that arrive in my inbox, but this doesn’t seem to work either, as similar emails continue to appear in the inbox.
Has anyone else experienced this, or knows why these rules might not be working?
I’m very much assuming that all of these spam emails mentioning ‘McAfee’ are not personally addressed to you? If you’ve never had a McAfee product, just submit a phishing report to BT for any emails that purport to support McAfee and let BT deal with them. Indeed I’d do that with any email in your spam folder that hasn’t got a legitimate affiliation to you, i.e. a company that you haven’t previously subscribed to that you could log back into and unsubscribe from yourself. Don’t however press an unsubscribe link on a spam email, it just lets the sender know that it’s an active email and they’ll just continue to spam you.
But I get around 10 a day (if not more) mentionning McAfee. Surely they must be from different email addresses. I've tried clicking block sender and domain in the past but they still come through.
As I said, submit a phishing report to BT for every single one of them so that BT can investigate and update their spam filters accordingly.
My only other suggestion, is that you find another email provider that doesn’t give you as many issues. They exist, both free and paid for. It really depends on how important retaining an ISP email is, whether that be borne out of convenience or you find it just too troublesome to use an alternative.
But this doesn't rectify the problem. I've submitted phisihing reports in the past and frequently block domain's and email addresses.
The issue is that BT has an email filter in place that should work. I would like someone to investigate why this isn't working for me.
Have you tried calling BT on 0330 1234150 ?
You may find that the only way of resolving your issue, is to help yourself by calling and speaking to a Team member who can look at why you're having email problems. If you're not prepared to do that, then you can only hope that someone here on the forum can advise you, but as there have been no other responses, you may well be waiting longer than you hoped.
The alternative solution, is to use another email provider, one that doesn't give you so many issues.
Hi there @joannasa
Thanks for coming to the community and making us aware.
Could you possibly attach a screenshot of the rule that you have set up, and we can check this is all correct? Please make sure to remove any personal details before posting.
Or, if this has personal details showing you can send this to me in a private message.
Thanks 🙂
Leanne,
I think using the built-in spam or junk mail reporting service is more reliable, as it trains the spam filter to block such messages, rather than relying on manual rules.
