True, but I would still like to see how another client handles the mails.
Outlook 365 seems to behave oddly with BTinternet mail.
Thank you everyone for your contributions so far. It's been a very interesting experience. Since I last posted I have installed eM Client, as you suggested, then arranged for a few emails and meeting invitations to be sent to me. In sequence this is what I've done:
1. Opened BT Webmail - attachments are there as Winmail.dat - closed webmail.
2. Opened iPhone emails - attachments are there correctly (MS Word, Exc el and meeting invitations) - shut down iphone email app.
3. Opened MS Outlook - attachments are there as Winmail.dat - closed MS Outlook.
4 Opened eM Client - attachments are there correctly (as 2 above). In fact corrupted attachments from yesterday are there as well, in their correct form.
5. Forwarded a "correct" email from eM Client to Outlook, and the attachments remained correct (i.e. were not converted to winmail.dat files)
This means that for some reason, BT webmail and MS Outlook are not presenting the attachments to me in their correct form, but iPhone and eM Client are.
That was the result I was expecting, but unfortunately I don't have an answer for why it is happening.
As stated in a previous post, I suspect the fundamental problem is a corruption by the sender which is not handled properly by BT webmail and Outlook365 both of which are effectively 'cloud' based rather than true standalone IMAP clients. True clients seem to cope with the corruption.
Very strange.
What happens if you forward one of the emails to your self and you open it only in webmail?
If it is received as a Winmail.dat file and I forward it on to my BT webmail it remains a winmail attachment. If it is received as the correct format, eg on my iPhone, and I forward it on to myself then it stays in the correct format on webmail.
Are you able to use another Laptop/PC using a network other than BT's such as at a friends house, and using only webmail see which format an attachment that is send from the original senders email account arrives as.
ie not using any of your equipment/devices to access webmail.
@scusack Just reading back through the messages it would appear that if collected by a different email address via Outlook 365 the attachment arrived ok.
So it is only a combination of Outlook365 and btinternet email that causes the problem.
Very odd indeed.
Did you send the details to the mods as requested? Hopefully the email team can investigate.
