"The sender address was invalid" error message

I am suddenly unable to send emails from my bt mail account from my iPhone mail.  It is working fine from my laptop and by logging into BT via a browser on my phone so it appears to be something to do with the mail app on the phone.

This may coincide with the latest iPhone software.

I have looked at several proposed remedies (Google search, Chat GPT) but none have worked so far.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: "The sender address was invalid" error message

Are you presently a BT Broadband customer or are you paying for your email through a BT Premium email account?

If neither of the above your email account may have been downgraded to a BTMail Basic account which can not be used with an email client

Re: "The sender address was invalid" error message

I am no longer a BT broadband customer, however, haven't been for a few years. So I must be on the basic plan - but this issue has only occurred over the past couple of weeks - plus I am still receiving emails.

Is this a recent change from BT?

Thank you.

Re: "The sender address was invalid" error message

It has been in place for a number of years and BT have slowly been implementing it.

It is often the case that when an email app is updated or a password change this forces the change at the BT servers.

You may be able to still receive emails but you will be blocked from the sending server.

Thank you for your helpful feedback. Probably time to change my email then!

That is of course up to you. It may be a bit of hassle to change your email address but once done, assuming you do not use an ISPs email address instead using a free account such as gmail it will only need to be done once and this frees you up to select any ISP in the future without having to be tied because of your email address.

You could consider a BT Premium email account at £7.50 per month or just use a web browser to access your BTMail account which still works in the same way as it did when you were a BT Broadband customer.

If you have a friend or relative that you trust that has BT Broadband you could affiliate your email account to that BT Broadband account and as long the account holder "gifts" you back your BTMail account and you accept it and set up your own BTID you will manage it and the BT Broadband account holder will not be able to access or change the password etc but they would retain the right to delete the email account.

This would make your BTMail account a "Standard" account again and you would be able to use email client/app to access and use it in the same way as you always did.
