I have inadvertently bought a full BT4600 unit with answer machine when what I actually wanted was just another handset to add to my existing BT4600 trio system. I need to know whether I must exchange this new unit for the basic 4600 handset or can I configure the more powerful unit that I have inadvertently bought (which includes the answer machine and phone line) so that it acts just as an additional handset? Many thanks for any guidance.

Hello @Captain_Nevica - welcome to the Community Forum,
In theory, you should be able to register your new handset to your pre-existing base unit as per the manual:
I think you should then avoid plugging-in the new base unit to the phone line and turn the answerphone feature off - otherwise complications could arise from handsets registered to different base units and multiple answerphones conflicting with one another or duplicating effort. See page 53 of the user guide for how to turn the answerphone off.
However, you might take the view that this turns your new answerphone base unit into an over-priced charging station, particularly if you still have the option to return it and obtain a refund.
If in doubt I would recommend calling the BT Device Helpline for specialist technical advice:

Probably the right decision. Even minor issues with the extra base unit/answerphone going forward and you'd have convinced yourself there was fundamental compatibility problem after all.
