Re: Digital Voice and Reduced Broadband Speeed

I moved my BT g.fast service to a new ISP this week (file sanctuary) , the new service is called "sogfast". Same speed as g.fast but without the phone service

Re: Digital Voice and Reduced Broadband Speeed

"...but the impact in this internet enabled age of automated homes is extremely high (heating, solar/battery, cameras, doorbell, lighting, streaming etc)"
I have difficulty understanding why anyone would make their house heating and lighting dependent on a good internet connection, when it is known that the internet can go down for a number of reasons. Why risk it, when there are perfectly good standalone options to control house heating and lighting - in the latter case just good old wall switches!

Re: Digital Voice and Reduced Broadband Speeed

@chrisjp  The problem with 'good old wall switches' is that when I'm sat on the beach in Antigua in December, I wouldn't be able to switch the heating back on (HIVE) the day before I come back home when I'm sat on the beach.

I admit, I rely on a good internet connection to provide a number of services I have running, CCTV, heating, my ancillary lighting amongst other things. But then I am on FTTP, it's absolutely rock solid, I don't use a garbage ISP router, we don't suffer any power cuts and everything works exactly as it should. I've not had any issues with my internet connection in over 5 years of living at my current property.

True, but why do you need to do this? If you switch on the heating the moment you get home, the house will be warm in less than an hour and, if you really can't tolerate it being a bit cold for that hour, a portable fan heater would provide instant heat.
Each to his own of course but, for me, connecting everything to the internet is just over-complicating life for no real advantage. Just because it can be done doesn't mean it's necessarily a good idea to do it!

Re: Digital Voice and Reduced Broadband Speeed

@chrisjp  To be fair, it’s entirely my choice to embrace technology as I see fit. At 60 years of age, I think I’m pretty well up there in terms of adapting to evolving technologies and I like the convenience it gives me. May not be your cup of tea, but it suits my lifestyle.

Re: Digital Voice and Reduced Broadband Speeed

So as a follow up, I have had an email regarding date of moving to Digital Voice and it states ..."You're getting the same speed and paying the same price you pay today."
We will see what happens in future with my speed whilst in this 2 yr contract.

Re: Digital Voice and Reduced Broadband Speeed

Digital Voice is not compatible with G.Fast. You won't be getting both.

Re: Digital Voice and Reduced Broadband Speeed

@cdownes I dont want to depress you further, but not only was my Fibre Speed downgraded from 280Mb to 80Mb, but to get around the minimum speed guarantee I had of 150Mb, they also unilaterally changed my contract with 18 months remaining.

I have raised a complaint with them since this breaches Ofcom rules.

The person in charge of digital voice migration is either unaware of the speed implications to 200,000+ customers with g.fast, hence not bothered to explain (without contradictory emails) the decrease in speed, and ideally provide an option not to move to digital voice until FTTP was available, or if they did know, felt it was OK to run roughshod over these customers even when they are in contract, and get around it by just changing their contract!  This could be an Ofcom complaint, depending on what they say and the options they offer. If they say I can leave without penalty, I have also asked for a lifetime use of my btinternet.com email addresses without the usual nominal retention payment

Re: Digital Voice and Reduced Broadband Speeed

You obviously can ask for whatever you like , as far as email , everyone keeps email access after leaving , but via a browser session rather than an email client, I dare say any claim on that front is somewhat dubious, keeping client access is unenforceable by anyone, keeping email access  in doubt.

I find it impossible to entertain the notion that you could be downgraded ( speed wise ) but be held to term , so I’d think a penalty free option to leave is certain, price wise , I’d expect a reduction to the prevailing F2 price (  as customers must be close enough to the copper cabinet for GFast that should  mean a fairly healthy 75Mb plus sync from FTTC )

As stated , although understanding the complaints here , as I see it , the onus is on BT to maintain the primary product and that’s the telephony service, even though for many now it’s simply an optional add on , so BT need to maintain telephony when BT SoGfast isn’t being made compatible with DV means conversion to FTTC with DV is an inevitable consequence.

For those where this reduction in speed is unacceptable, leave and join a SoGfast provider and if telephony is still required, arrange it with a third party VoIP supplier.

FWIW , all this ‘I’ve a contract’ talk , companies change these all the time , customers get shifted to companies they never asked to join , product get removed or replaced, think you have a case seek legal opinion , generally if the price and terms stay the same you can’t leave the new provider , if the terms do change (as they clearly have ) you can leave penalty free .

I’d agreeBT seem to have made a mess if communicating this , but as far as 200,000 BT Gfast  customers, care to share the source for this , even if 200,000 is accurate, that may  be an Openreach figure including many other ISP’s .

Re: Digital Voice and Reduced Broadband Speeed

@Gazzer58 i told you the answer last night, waiting for the complaint is not going to change it. You'll be allowed to leave free of charge, that's it

As stated the comms you received about the speed drop were correct & should have mentioned it. You not responding would have triggered the move but you'll get to cancel without fees
