Noisy line, poor internet and dropouts. How long!

It's been a good 7 months since this issue began originally posted

. . . and a good 9 months since the issue began.

I still have a very noisy line. Especially when wet or cold. So much so that you cannot hear the person on the other of the line.   Here's an example recording on the quiet line test

Also, as a result my internet connection drops whenever anyone rings or I pick up the phone to ring anyone else. I used to get a good 42mbps connection but this has dropped to a hard 35mbps and lower depending upon the weather!

Initially it took 3 engineer visits and the problem was not really diagnosed. The final Openreach engineer said he had "fiddled" it seemed better and to see how it went on.  During the dry summer it was fine (no damp!) but over this winter it has deteriorated.  I think we now need to get it sorted once and for all. Especially for the ever increasing cost.

Can one of the moderators possibly get something arranged without having to do all the standard weeks of basic tests and engineers?  This is obviously a wiring issue that needs to be fixed.

Engineer turned up today unannounced and declared he would fix the issue with my line.

Apparently  there was some kind of voltage leak in wiring at the top of the pole near my house (it's very old and messy).  The engineer spent a few hours tidying this up.  Feel sorry for him in the cold.  I was at work but the wife said he was very "old school" which was definitely meant as a compliment.

At the moment the line is quiet and the internet is connected at a good 45mbps with a very low ping.  The old wiring may mean the issue resurfaces in the future but at least we'll now know where to look.  We shall have to see how it settles but it looks like we've found the issue at last.

I had this when with Plusnet. No fibre, just standard router etc. The crackling lasted a good 6 months, causing the inevitable internet problems, and over which time god knows how many Openreach visits took place. Funny thing is the quiet line tests always seemed pretty good ie very little crackle if at all. But on calls, crackle all the time. It really did sound like bad or oxidised crimps somewhere (along the line 😊) sorry  😞 In the end a great engineer swapped pairs to give me someone else’s line who apparently was no longer subscribed. That was 4 years ago. Now we are BT fttp. But recently the crackles are back. Haven’t been too worried as now no internet affected. But still want to fix it, I am paying rental on it after all. So have just done the automated  line test and all looks fine. Same on quiet line test. That’s the only thing: crackly line on just about all calls but good quiet line tests 🤔 Have never understood that bit. Have obviously done the direct to master socket trick with one old fashioned non wireless handset, the sort you use to make a call in a power cut. Despite this ambiguous situation ie quiet line test ok, it surely has to be the line, going on how the exact same problem got fixed by effectively having a new line.  Maybe someone else’s crackly line has suddenly been fixed, with mine unexplainably being unfixed. Or, maybe, explainably  🤔 👿  
ps have always wondered about quiet line tests. Maybe you could have a crackly  line that passes that test, and only starts crackling once “sound energy” is put through. Ie if no one talks, it’s ok but once they do, here comes the crackle. Changing voltage/ current over the dodgy crimps?

You should be able to find the right board to post on, but I am sure you mean FTTC and not FTTP, as FTTP is a direct fibre into your house.
