I have just renewed my contract. There is a charge of £3 for pay as you go for calls. If I didn’t have this package would I still be able to receive calls on my landline? We always use our mobiles for calls but our elderly parents prefer to call us on our landline as they don’t own mobiles!

No, that is the charge for the ability to make and receive calls. PAYG is just the default if you actually make any calls.
Calls are now handled by the BT Smart Hub 2, and not over your old phone socket on the wall, just in case you were not aware.

Re: Pay as you go calls
You pay the £3.00 to have the digital voice service so you can receive calls and make them if you choose.
If you cancel that off you are cancelling your digital voice service so will no longer have a telephone.
