SmartHub just for DV - please confirm my plan

I should know this but I thought I would check.  I'm renewing next month, I'm on FTTC (63 down/18 up),  so there is a risk that I will be offered DV and I want to be ready for that.  I'm not aware of anyone round here (east side of City of Edinburgh) who has DV. 

I currently use a DECO M5 mesh network, running off a BT modem, no HH.  I'd like to keep that (clearly without the modem).

So I would install my new SmartHub, if it comes, turn off its wi-fi, put it in place of the current modem, connect my Deco system and live with double natting (I don't think that is a problem).  I would connect my chain of telephone handsets to the socket on the SH2 and be back near enough to where I am now.  I guess I can't turn off the associated DECT phone but I would just not switch it on, leave it in its box.  I have a set of BT DECT phones which were untidy and difficult to use - so the new one could go into store with them.

Would there be any other adjustments I need to make? And, if a miracle occurred and OpenReach returned to complete the laying of FTTP they started 2 years ago, all I would have to do is plug the SH2 into the ONT?

Its difficult to say, but as you mentioned DV, there have been plenty of similar posts on this board regarding using third party networks, and you talked about wiring up your extensions, which as also been on this board, so it seemed appropriate, as it may not have occurred to others that you can do that, even though it was mentioned on this board before.

Your Deco system would have no impact on DV.

This was a previous post about connecting your existing phone sockets  It is not a problem with FTTP but with FTTC you will need to ensure that extension wiring does not connect to the external wiring.

Yes, my phones are daisy-chained from the master socket so I need to rewire the start of the chain.  The wiring is all in  a large void under the house so that is easy.  I am hoping for FTTP soon but that will depend on finding a way to the house and then through the stone walls of the house. 

When I first set up the Deco mesh, leaving the HH5 Wi-Fi running, my printer stayed on the HH5 and everything else connected to Deco so I could not print.  The move off the HH5 made a much better system.  With SH2 I will turn off the wi-fi from the start.  The DECT would be of limited use as the signal does not reach far through stone.

It is helpful to have the confirmation that all should be well - I was planning to rearrange stuff when FTTP arrived but that seems to be a couple of years away unless I move to Vodafone/CityFibre - but their fibre is really awkward to route to.

You can of course use the digital voice adapter, and locate that at the start of the chain of wiring, that could stay there whichever service you are on, provided the DVA is within range of the Smart Hub 2 DECT.

Thanks, yes  - I'm not quite sure what the adapter is - a cable to connect? 

I've got a set of BT DECT phones already - tried them for a few months and put them back in the box.  I don't like the keyboard in my ear, nor the wee stand and having to power each one. 

But then, I like my iPhone but don't use it for calls: it is a portable computer and camera primarily.  Monthly: used minutes nil, used texts nil. Many, many emails, calendar, contacts, bus app checks, bank, Basecamp, my videos and photos - no good for an hour's chat to my family.

The adapter is a DECT receiver with a phone socket on it.

@Keith_Beddoe Thanks - so that converts a phone to DECT - and might enable  my daisy chain to be connected in one go.  Worth a thought.  I seem to remember that BT will give (sell?) one - is it possible to have (get) more?

You will be given one for free, as an option instead of the phones. You  only need one to connect to the start of the daisy chain, or at a suitable point in the chain.
