It is an optional project. This was confirmed by @Bob1001 who obviously has experience in these matters.

Re: Telephone line switch off ?

I’ll assume that this thread isn’t some sort of wind up , but PSTN is being switched off, that isn’t negotiable, all traditional telephony ( from BT ) will stop at that point, the replacement , DV , in effect requires a broadband connection, that could provided from the exchange (ADSL), from the cabinet (FTTC),  or FTTP , the crucial point is that the phone instrument will not plug into a master phone socket, but will plug into the phone port of a broadband router, even if the copper pair is still used, as already stated , your existing copper pair line will handle a 0.5Mb as telephony needs a tiny amount of bandwidth, it’s the PSTN that’s being retired , not the copper pair network, although in time that to will be replaced by FTTP.

 If you really paid an IT specialist, who told you your line is incapable of broadband , you wasted your money , whoever it was , did not have access to Openreach buildings, equipment ,lines  or testers , so any opinion offered would be worthless, the fact that you won’t post your line prediction from the DSL checker , using your phone number , which is accurate, suggests you know you are incorrect.

Obviously being moved onto DV is optional, from the point of view , you don’t have to have BT or Openreach provide you with service , but if your ‘landline’ telephone service is from BT , it will , by the end of 2025 be DV .

Hi you posted 'the replacement DV in effect requires a broadband connection'. No it isn't a wind up. You've already said 'broadband connection'. You are forgetting we don't all have broadband connections!

I'm trying to get across important points.

We don't all have broadband connections, as BT Broadband is only available on compatible phone lines. My telephone line DOES not work with routers, and would have to be changed. (meaning lots of work for Openreach!)

End of. We will see what happens 2025.

I have no idea where you get this idea of 'compatibility' from. Post the results from the checker as requested and we can all see whether your line is 'compatible'.

These checkers tell you what you WILL get, not what you have.

@Anonymous

The dslchecker shows what broadband connection your current phone line can get not will get. Why are you so scared to post the results apart from it showing you are totally wrong

You are missing the point. My telephone line has been checked many times by Openreach and they all say the same thing - if I signed up to BT Broadband they would have to change the phone line. My telephone line is not adequate for the internet, and would have to be changed  and VoiP sounds like it needs an internet connection to work. It sounds like a hassle!

I think it's appalling that phone lines are going to be switched off in 2025 and we can only make phone calls with a router, which have to be switched on all day just to make or receive a phone call.BT have kept very quiet about it.

It should be an optional project, for those that use BT Broadband already, not something compulsory that we are all forced to change to.

I'm not changing our phone line just for the sake of a router which can only be used to make phone calls and has to be left switched on all day.

Let's keep this 'switch off' optional. I shouldn't be expected to need a router just to make a phone call.

You will lose many BT customers over this if this switch off of our phone lines becomes compulsory and we can only get phone calls with a router.

If I can't make phone calls without having to have a router after 2025 then after 40 yearsof being a BT customer I will have to think seriously about leaving BT and just use my 02 mobile. It's really not worth the hassle!

A piece of wet string would be adequate for VOIP, voice only requires 64Kbps.

If I can't make ordinary phone calls without having to have a router after 2025 then after 40 years of being a BT customer I will have to think seriously about leaving BT and just use my 02 mobile to make calls. It's really not worth the hassle! I'd rather have a piece of string thank you!

@Anonymous

As you have your head stuck in the sand as far  as openreach are turning of PSTN and you will not post dslchecker results to show you can get broadband on your current phone line the mods would be as well closing this thread as it is now going nowhere
