Hi, I am on a 40GB monthly package. A couple of days ago I got an email saying I was already on 36GB, and now today it's on 67GB!! I have been given some figures by the BT Chat Help people. They are showing huge upload figures for the last three days: 17GB, 21GB, 9GB etc. A week ago it was around 50 to 100 MB a day upload. What is going on?
How do I find out if I am being hacked? I have made a copy of the Hub Event Log for the last days - it only seems to go back to the 12th March. I don't know how to read it. There are various options under Category: I did 'All' but would one of the others make it easier - 'System', 'WAN' etc.
I have a 14 digit wireless key, so it couldn't easily have hacked by brute force, I wouldn't have thought.
Should I change the wireless key anyway? Can I avoid paying for this, if I can prove it was not my usage?
Appreciate your help,
Its very unlikely you have been hacked, its more likely that something has changed at your end. This guide may help.
Try to think of anything else you may have added to your network, or any change in the way you use your connection.
Could someone nearby have seen your wireless key, and are using it on their devices?
You can always change it from the default setting, if you think this may have happened.
You could have downloaded some malware, which is uploading lots of data to the Internet, or sending out spam e-mails.
Have you noticed any of your computers slowing down, or misbehaving? Did you download any programs, or open any e-mail attachments that may have contained a virus?
You should be able to see that on the hub stats page, and identify which device on your network is doing it.
Keith, thanks for your reply.
No, there has been no change in the way we use the internet. We just use the web, send emails etc. No TV, Skype etc. No P2P. So no reason for upload to increase. BT Chat Help gave us these figures for the last week:
Your broadband usage for Mar 2014. Last update on 15 March 2014 at 23:59.
Upload: 49.32 GB
Download: 18.13 GB
Total usage: 67.45 GB
Andrew Chapman: We don't upload at all, so far as I know. How can that be?
BT advisor: if you want i can give you the breakdown of last 7days
Andrew Chapman: OK thanks.
Upload: 8985.00 MB
Download: 1229.00 MB
Total usage: 10214 MB
Upload: 21110.00 MB
Download: 3079.00 MB
Total usage: 24189 MB
Upload: 17459.00 MB
Download: 1549.00 MB
Total usage: 19008 MB
Upload: 94.00 MB
Download: 730.00 MB
Total usage: 824 MB
Upload: 2112.00 MB
Download: 2540.00 MB
Total usage: 4652 MB
Upload: 62.00 MB
Download: 810.00 MB
Total usage: 872 MB
Upload: 54.00 MB
Download: 791.00 MB
Total usage: 845 MB
So our upload usage has gone from around 50, 60 or 90 MB to 10 or 20GB per day!!
No, I haven't given out the wireless key.
Then take a look at the upload/download stats on the home hub, and see what they say, see if they are changing all the time.
Is there a lot of data activity on the hub, (or modem if you have Infinity)
Malware or virus activity would show up on those stats, as increasing usage.
Somebody rang from BT Technical. Wanted me to turn off the Hub for 5 to 10 minutes to do a test. I read on one of these threads not to do that. I asked him to ring back in couple of hours. Should I agree to do that?
Thanks, Keith. Sorry, I can't immediately see where those stats are.
I do not have a HH3, but someone may be able to point you to the right place. I think I read that it resets every 4GB, but it will at least show you what is going up and down.
