I'm having fibre fitted soon but do not want the SmartHub in the room where the fibre "gubbins" will be, i.e. where the cable comes into the house.
Can I use the BB powerline extenders to have the router not in the same room but elsewhere?
In theory they are designed to extend the LAN rather than the WAN but I have heard of them being used to carry the WAN, no guarantees, I think it is a case of try it and see.
Ah. That is a pain as the engineers said that I could do this. I posted here when I couldn't find anything on the Internet of people doing this.
Is there any other way?
As I said, I'm fairly sure it will work but you need to try it, the protocol on the WAN is Ethernet so should be ok. The only alternative is to run Cat5 Ethernet cable between the ONT and Hub.
I'm just thinking about what to do if it doesn't work.
When I asked about plugging the router in via a long cable, the BT guy said that they can't guarantee that this will work!
Seems a bit drastic. Just plug a cordless base station in the ONT and use cordless phones.
