BT Home Hub is blocking access to Google & Facebook

Hi everyone. This is extremely frustrating.

On my laptop, I can't access Google & Facebook a lot of the time. Sometimes I can. Mostly, it just sticks at 'waiting for google.co.uk'.

Other computers on my network have no problem. It happens on the laptop in every browser, and even on the command line if I use a simple command like 'curl http://www.google.co.uk' - I end up with a timeout error.

I decided to look into my HH logs, and there it is in black and white: the HH is blocking outgoing connections to google & facebook, claiming it's a "TCP reset attack".

I turned the firewall off, but it still blocks them.

Please can someone help? It is having a major effect on how I do things - I can't access Google Analytics or Google Webmaster Tools for the websites I run, and even Gmail is failing.

This is an example of the log entry:

Facebook being blocked:

09:55:45, 08 Aug.OUT: BLOCK [15] Default policy (First packet in connection is not a SYN packet: TCP [192.168.0.2]:52485->[31.13.80.49]:443 on ppp0)

09:55:45, 08 Aug.OUT: BLOCK [9] Packet invalid in connection (tcp reset attack is suspected: TCP [192.168.0.2]:52485->[31.13.80.49]:443 on ppp0)

09:54:02, 08 Aug.OUT: BLOCK [9] Packet invalid in connection (tcp reset attack is suspected: TCP [192.168.0.2]:52386->[31.13.81.128]:443 on ppp0)

Google being blocked:

09:53:12, 08 Aug.OUT: BLOCK [9] Packet invalid in connection (tcp reset attack is suspected: TCP [192.168.0.2]:52186->[31.55.184.215]:443 on ppp0)

09:53:02, 08 Aug.OUT: BLOCK [9] Packet invalid in connection (tcp reset attack is suspected: TCP [192.168.0.2]:52026->[31.55.184.214]:443 on ppp0)

09:52:32, 08 Aug.OUT: BLOCK [9] Packet invalid in connection (tcp reset attack is suspected: TCP [192.168.0.2]:52401->[31.13.81.128]:443 on ppp0)

Can anyone please help me with this? It is so frustrating when a device is acting on its own like this 😞

The Home Hub software is: version 4.7.5.1.83.8.94.1.37 (Type A)

Thank you 🙂

Re: BT Home Hub is blocking access to Google & Facebook

I was experiencing similar problems recently - mostly on high availability sites such as bbc.co.uk/news and tesco.com.

After a (long!) conversation with a support engineer, and then with his super effective boss, we identified the issue.

If you have a Home Hub 4, log into the hub using your admin password. If you see your broadband username is bthomehub@btbroadband.com, then try changing it to bthomehub@btinternet.com. To do this, go to Advanced Settings, click Disconnect, change the name, then click connect (ignore password).

This solved the problem for me.

As an aside, we had been chasing this problem for weeks, and I insisted on changing the Home Hub. This made no difference. It was changing the broadband username that did the trick.

0 out of 10 for the first level support; 12 out of ten for the super supervisor.
