BT Hub4 - can it act as DNS server for basic hostname resolution

Go to solution

Hi

I have a small home wifi network with a BT Hub4 TypeA.  Some of the computers are virtual (VMWare) so quite often end up adding or removing virtual machines.  I like to give static IP addresses.  All works good.

However, I get fed up handling local 'hosts' files on machines (real and virtual) to reflect changes in the network.  Is there any way BT hub4 or later can be set up to provide basic DNS name resolution on the local network.  I know I could set up a windows machine running a DNS server but thats an overhead I'd rather avoid.

Any help appreciated

Mike

Its not possible on any of the recent BT Home hubs, as the DNS server setting are locked in firmware.

It was possible on the very first home hub 1, as it was possible to edit the configuration file using Telnet, to provide local name resolution. Telnet was blocked on the later versions.

You may be able to do it with a third party router.
