Re: BT Web Address Help opt out isn't working

Go to solution

Thanks for letting me know.    Is there any information on what happened?  I thought the Web Address Help service was something set on the router, rather than a central service affecting everyone. Can you provide any more details?

Re: BT Web Address Help opt out isn't working

Apologies to resurrect this thread but I was able to connect onto the VPN by disabling the "BT Web address help". However as of 2 days ago, I cannot connect onto the VPN. It's saying that I am disabled but I don't think this is the case. Is there a known problem with BT Web Address help?

Re: BT Web Address Help opt out isn't working

It's back and broken once again. My preferences show that web address helper is disabled but I now get redirections again to the BT web address helper search when I query invalid sites.

What can we do to make this function sticky and permanently opt out of this service?

Matt

@PaddyB

The opt out is broken once again. My preferences show it as disabled but I'm redirected once again to the help web page.

What can we do to make this permanent and fully opted out of this very unhelpful service?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi

I've got this issue now and I believe it's stopping my VPN from working.

Help please!

Re: BT Web Address Help opt out isn't working

This web address help opt out seems to be intermitently broken again Smiley Sad .  Strangely for me it only seems to be failing when querying for a non-existant domain on a non-existant TLD, so e.g. a query for sdkjbsdjkgbsj.com correctly returns an NXDOMAIN response but a query for sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz often returns the IP 92.242.132.15 which is to do with the web address help service:

user:host:~$ host -t A sdkjbsdjkgbsj.com 81.139.56.100
Using domain server:
Name: 81.139.56.100
Address: 81.139.56.100#53
Aliases:

Host sdkjbsdjkgbsj.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
user@host:~$ host -t A sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz 81.139.56.100
Using domain server:
Name: 81.139.56.100
Address: 81.139.56.100#53
Aliases:

sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz has address 92.242.132.15

Also the behaviour seems slightly different between the two DNS server IPs.  Lookups for a domain which should fail consistently return the IP address 92.242.132.15 when querying the DNS server 81.139.56.100, but those same lookups on the DNS server 81.139.57.100 sometimes return that web address help IP and sometimes work correctly and return an NXDOMAIN response as they should:

user@host:~$ host -t A sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz 81.139.56.100
Using domain server:
Name: 81.139.56.100
Address: 81.139.56.100#53
Aliases:

sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz has address 92.242.132.15
user@host:~$ host -t A sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz 81.139.56.100
Using domain server:
Name: 81.139.56.100
Address: 81.139.56.100#53
Aliases:

sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz has address 92.242.132.15
user@host:~$ host -t A sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz 81.139.56.100
Using domain server:
Name: 81.139.56.100
Address: 81.139.56.100#53
Aliases:

sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz has address 92.242.132.15
user@host:~$ host -t A sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz 81.139.57.100
Using domain server:
Name: 81.139.57.100
Address: 81.139.57.100#53
Aliases:

Host sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
user@host:~$ host -t A sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz 81.139.57.100
Using domain server:
Name: 81.139.57.100
Address: 81.139.57.100#53
Aliases:

sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz has address 92.242.132.15
user@host:~$ host -t A sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz 81.139.57.100
Using domain server:
Name: 81.139.57.100
Address: 81.139.57.100#53
Aliases:

sdkjbsdjkgbsj.comz has address 92.242.132.15

This difference in behaviour might just be something to do with how they send requests to different machines - I don't know.

Anyway something is clearly a bit broken so if a moderator could kindly pass on my feedback to the team responsible for the DNS servers that would be appreciated Smiley Happy

Re: BT Web Address Help opt out isn't working

It's approaching 24 hours now since I posted and it's still broken.   I'd really rather not phone up a call centre and try and get them to understand the problem and get the information to the right people for it to be fixed.  You can read how that went last time in my first post in this thread........

BT Staff / Moderators can you please make the right people aware of this problem if they are not already?
