BT blacklisting Tor and other sites

I do *not* have Parental Controls  on as I am not a parent have no children around and see no need for them.

I recently tired to follow a link from this BBC page "said a blog entry about the bug" in a pargraph 5 from:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-26935905

This should connect to:

https://blog.torproject.org/blog/openssl-bug-cve-2014-0160

It does not and just times out. Here is the traceroute to blog.torproject.org:

Both sites are up as I can open them fine in my Tor browser - which I was motivated to dwonload after coming across this blacklisting. It is trivial to obtain form other Tor mirrors.

Now let's try and go to blocked.org.uk - a perfectly respectable web site managed by the Open Rights Group and used to monitor sites blocked by UK mobile operators:

1  bthomehub (192.168.1.254)  1.410 ms  1.249 ms  1.245 ms

 2  217.32.142.194 (217.32.142.194)  17.394 ms  18.658 ms  17.483 ms

 3  217.32.142.222 (217.32.142.222)  20.826 ms  21.188 ms  20.827 ms

 4  212.140.206.50 (212.140.206.50)  23.820 ms  24.174 ms  23.490 ms

 5  31.55.165.187 (31.55.165.187)  25.342 ms  24.937 ms  25.529 ms

 6  31.55.165.107 (31.55.165.107)  27.072 ms  27.036 ms  26.980 ms

 7  acc1-10gige-4-2-2.mr.21cn-ipp.bt.net (109.159.250.116)  23.324 ms

    acc1-10gige-3-2-0.mr.21cn-ipp.bt.net (109.159.250.104)  23.667 ms

    acc1-10gige-4-1-2.mr.21cn-ipp.bt.net (109.159.250.112)  24.817 ms

 8  core1-te0-14-0-3.ealing.ukcore.bt.net (109.159.250.5)  29.765 ms

    core2-te0-3-0-13.ilford.ukcore.bt.net (109.159.250.28)  39.186 ms

    core2-te0-3-5-0.ilford.ukcore.bt.net (109.159.250.15)  38.383 ms

 9  acc1-10gige-4-0-0.sf.21cn-ipp.bt.net (109.159.251.24)  40.582 ms  41.238 ms

    acc1-10gige-5-2-0.sf.21cn-ipp.bt.net (109.159.251.184)  39.105 ms

Only this time we get a repsonse from:

blockpage.bt.com/pcstaticpage/blocked.html?list=global_blacklist&policy=

to the effect:

"http://blocked.org.uk/  has been blocked by BT Parental Controls because the account holder has filters on."

The site is up and reachable by Tor.

So it looks to me as though BT is implementing an unannounced policy of blocking anything to do with Tor and the open rights movement. Looks to me like they are taking orders from the likes of GCHQ!

I have raised a ticket with the BT helpdesk who have escalated it to level 2 who have so far failed to call me back on this as arranged on two occasions.

I should make it clear that I have no axe to grind here, I have never used Tor prior to this incident and I am not a member of any rughts or campaining group, just a BT Broadband user who seems to have stumbled across state sponsred censorship by BT.

Re: BT blacklisting Tor and other sites

There has been a similar post within the past few days.

It would appear that for what ever reason, BT have/are turning on Parental Controls. It may be something to do with this where it says Existing users of BT's broadband will be contacted during 2014 and asked to make a decision on whether or not they want to set up the new service.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25400009

It seems the only way to turn them off is to set them up then switch them off.

See guide.

EDIT: I don't have parental controls and likewise for me, both links work so it is not a general block.

Re: BT blacklisting Tor and other sites

Fine here too, using OpenDNS, as opposed to BT's DNS servers, if that's of any relevance.
