Can i just openreach modem

I would like to ditch my BT Home Hub for a UPNP / port forwarding router, as there is no 'modem mode' on BT  i would use an OpenReach modem and attach a Netgear to that.

What is the detail of doing that or is the Openreach modem just a plug a play device. eg: will i have to spend hours on the phone to BT support.

The modem is just plug and play. If you get a Netgear VDSL modem/router, you can connect just using the one box. Either way, the PPP session will be dealt with by the Netgear. The settings you need are PPPoE, VLAN101, username homehub@btbroadband.com and password BT.
