Re: Cannot access BBC or Facebook

This looks like an entirely separate issue - the BBC / Facebook / Akamai problem results in complete lack of connectivity to the Akamai hosts in the 213.120.157/24 subnet.

Re: Cannot access BBC or Facebook

yeah no symptoms here at all, everything works fine, the posts were to establish a baseline, I noted the loss though it produces no symptoms.

Re: Cannot access BBC or Facebook

So just trying to get up to speed we are working on a theory that a problem exists on the CDN which is being managed by BT (aka Content Connect) specifically via the Akamai host?

Is it possible that Akamai is hosting and serving content for Facebook, BT, Tesco, Amazon and not communicating successfully back via "Content Connect"

Am I even following this correctly? It's late and I'm not sure if thIs is starting to get away from me!!

Re: Cannot access BBC or Facebook

Have done bit more reading on how Akamai works so my fresh understanding is that Akamai have several "nodes" or servers located worldwide which stores content (such as images, scripts etc) on behalf of certain websites (tesco, Facebook, bbc etc)

When a user looks up a websites the content is then fetched from the closest Akamai server so as to optimise the speed at which the content is delivered (rather than fetching it directly from the websites actual local server which might be located in the US, which would be a slow route also if many users all tried to fetch content from this one location then the website server would become overloaded and likely crash)

Based on this principal it seems that for many if us our connection problems arise as a result of our connection to this local Akamai server which is being slow to respond at delivering the website content or in some cases not at all.

Theoretically as mentioned by Brandscill this might be down to our location in the UK as to which Akamai node we are all trying to communicate with?

BT should be able to figure this by our IP addresses so don't forget to check at http://whatismyipaddress.com and post your info up here!

Re: Cannot access BBC or Facebook

Could something similar to what this article discusses be happening?

http://gigaom.com/2011/08/08/akamai-dns-issue/

Seems like something BT and Akamai may need to resolve between them?

Re: Cannot access BBC or Facebook

Interesting stuff, Ant3000, and the plot thickens by the day, it seems.

Just wondering about the security implications of us all posting our IP addresses on a public forum, though. Could it mean direct access to our computers for those with evil intent, of which there are many on this internet thingy?

Just a thought ...

Re: Cannot access BBC or Facebook

My understand is that the IP address is actually the IP address of your internet service providers "terminal" (for want of a better word) and so it doesn't actually give any personal details or locations but just the location of your bt "terminal"

My IP shows as Aylesbury from which I am actually probably over a 100 miles north of!!

OK, Ant3000,

Sorry for the distraction ... maybe I'm more paranoid than I thought!
