Connecting Printer to HH5 via USB

Go to solution

Hi, BT guys n dolls

This is not straightforward at all -- I've tried the good advice from expert geaves here

https://community.bt.com/t5/ADSL-Copper-BB-Speed-Connection/Connecting-a-printer-to-my-USB-hub/td-p/...

  1. Add your printer normally as if its attached to your machine.
  2. Once added, right click on properties then on the ports tab.
  3. Click add port, choose Standard TCP/IP Port, click New Port.
  4. Enter 192.168.1.253 as the IP address, and anything you like as the name.
  5. Click Custom, then Settings.
  6. Choose LPR as protocol Queue Name: LPT1 check LPR byte counting as enabled, click ok.
  7. Finish the wizard.

Using Windows 8.1 , HomeHub 5  - tried doing the above help by connecting via wireless
then connected soley through ethernet to the HH5 - ( canon printer connected via USB )

There seems to be no way of getting Windows/Network/Hub to recogise the USB device?
going into advanced setting of HUB, via http://192.168.1.254/ doesn't offer any help either

has anyone managed to connect a printer via USB via their BT Hub ? 1,2,3,4 or 5?
Be great to hear from you and get to the bottom of this , and hopefully solved 🙂

    p.s have latest Canon MX375 win8.1 drivers downloaded/installed

Hi

Happy to be corrected but I understood printers could not be connected to any HH by USB cable.

HI Tim

According to BT you are correct. The USB on the hub is a bit hit and miss for most things. If you want to network a printer you're best to buy a network printer and connect either by wireless or Ethernet. Failing that network it by connecting it through a PC on your network

Re: Connecting Printer to HH5 via USB

The  HH5 will detect a USB stick, which you can add/delete  files easily.
But so far cannot detect a printer

The Network path for the USB stick is \\BTHUB5\usb1
identifies computer name as Bthub5

advanced settings HH5 detect the USB stick

trying to get an IP or mac address - to help with adding printer

nothing, nada --

Re: Connecting Printer to HH5 via USB

purchased cheaply ( £1.65 ) a FEMALE USB TO MALE ETHERNET RJ45,
might work rather than buy a usb/ethernet printer server --
will try plugging this into a spare port on the HH5 and connecting usb canon printer to it
will have an IP address at least, might be able to configure Network or TCP/IP - Port
Any predictions what Hub/Network/Windows will see/recognize/detect?
Its worth a fiddle isn't it? 🙂

Are you being serious...  That adapter will definitely not work and has a reasonable chance of frying something.

Re: Connecting Printer to HH5 via USB

Yeah its pants, was hoping that the etherport on HH5 would give me an IP I could use

as windows 8  additional programs has  TCP printer port software

Network card/printer only solution as that cab be tired to an IP &/or mac address

HH6 could feature a network printer port on the hub - that'd be cool 🙂
