Connecting a Kobo via WiFi on HH4

Hello

I went thru days of problems trying to connect a Kindle to my BT home network - with HH4.

In the end I had to enter all the DNS info, IP addresses by hand and it worked!

I now have a Kobo mini (wife bought this for £29 in WHSmiths!)

And I have the same problem - won't connect.

Oddly, if I run the BT Home Hub manager - it sees the device (I checked the MAC address) and gives it an IP address and confirms it's connected . . . but the device doesn't agree!!

I don't think Kobo giveus the option of manually entering the info??  Anyone??

This thread deals with that problem, albeit it's quite old, but there are several solutions there that worked for other people:

Re: Connecting a Kobo via WiFi on HH4

Thanks for that. Yes, it is an old thread but some useful ideas but none that worked for me.

Strange that the HH4 sees the device, assigns it an IP address and tells me it is connected but the connection fails.

This Kobo is a cheap and nasty reader, to be honest (when compared to Kindle) - there's no manual wifi set up page.

At least I can connect via USB and so should be OK.  I'll take it out and about and see if it connects to other wifi hotspots.

Come back HH2!!

Re: Connecting a Kobo via WiFi on HH4

Hi ProfZarkov

You have probably considered this already, but the HH4 uses smart wireless set up, I wonder if you disable that does it then connect?

I can ask the hub team for some suggestions for you, but let me know how that goes.

Thanks

Jacqui

Re: Connecting a Kobo via WiFi on HH4

As well as the "Smart Wireless" make sure that the "Smart Set Up" is also tuned off.

Re: Connecting a Kobo via WiFi on HH4

Hi

No, tried that. I have smart setup turned off and I have smart wireless turned off too.

The HH4 sees the Kobo and assigns it an address but it just fails to connect.

The Kobo reports "unable to join . . ."

I'll take it out and try it elsewhere just to make sure it actually works.

Then I'll know that it's the HH4.

Wish I'd bought a non BT router now.

My neighbour has a nice Asus one that has none of these connection problems.

Onwards.

Steve

Re: Connecting a Kobo via WiFi on HH4

Hello again.

Took the Kobo out to a local hotspot and it connected seamlessly, no problem.

So the Kobo is OK.

BT Homehub 4 isn't.

There is no manual set up on the Kobo (unlike the Kindle) so I'm stuck.

I still get trouble connecting the LG Smart TV to the network and this is via ethernet!

I have to go into the TV settings and make it connect which it does - eventually.

Never had this issue with HH2.

I have made a formal complaint and hope to get either a replacement HH4 or a HH5 . . .

When you try and sign on to your Homehub I take it you are using the wireless passkey on the homehub label and not your email password or the admin password?

Re: Connecting a Kobo via WiFi on HH4

Hmm, the above answer was not helpful! I have dozens of devices, some ethernet some wireless . . .

The problem was solved this morning when a replacement HH4 arrived.

The Kobo connected straight away.

It seems this box is a slight firmware improvement as it has the BT WiFi option (the old one had BT Fon!) as one of the available networks (ie for outsiders to hotspot) - the Kobo joined that straight away.

So - it WAS the box!

If any other folk get similar connections problems, ask for a replacement HH4!

Thanks to BT for sorting this out (took an hour on the phone!).

Re: Connecting a Kobo via WiFi on HH4

Sorry the answer was not helpfull to you, it is a common mistake that many people do by using their email password and as I am not a mind reader I was unaware that you have dozens of devices connected and would not make this mistake but at least you have it sorted now.
