DNS Problem/Message stopping Kindle Fire 8

Go to solution

All previously ok with Kindle until yesterday when using safari browser keep getting this message popping up which freezes the screen. You are seeing this page because you are using a BT service which requires the use of BT DNS servers and it appears that you are attempting to connect using a DNS server outside of our network. Our BT Web Protect and BT Parental controls both require the use of our BT DNS server to keep you safe online. You may have selected a different server in your network settings or installed an application that uses an alternative service. Click here to find out how to fix this.

Click here doesn't work and looking at BT help pages doesn't help. Can't find on the kindle where to look for DNS settings but we haven't changed anything. We need parental controls so don't want to switch them off or delete.

What can I do?

Thanks

Re: DNS Problem/Message stopping Kindle Fire 8

A Google search found this post.

http://www.groovypost.com/howto/customize-dns-kindle-fire-hdx/

Make sure that both of the DNS settings are set to 192.168.1.254 and not the settings shown on that post.

Many Android devices seem to default to Google Public DNS, which will cause the error message you describe.

Thank you Keith.

Managed to find where to alter the kindle wifi settings under static IP and found that the kindle was using google DNS server. Not sure if this has suddenly altered on the kindle after an update or whether it has always been set to google DNS. Only had problems over the last two days. The kindle did do an update at the beginning of the week.

Anyway, altering the settings to BT DNS seems to have worked for now.

Oddly when we looked in the settings the gateway had 192.168.1.1 so we also changed that to 192.168.1.254

Looks to be a kindle problem rather than a smart hub problem this time.

Re: DNS Problem/Message stopping Kindle Fire 8 - Thought it was solved but problem back again

Go to solution

Unfortunately the DNS server message has come back onto the kindle screen. We changed the DNS settings away from Google DNS to BT DNS and fine for a couple of hours but now back to square one.

Would be grateful for any other suggestions?

Many Thanks.

Is it going back to Google settings again?

Did you make sure that manual settings option was set to static, and if so, had it changed?

Its a bit odd, because even in automatic settings it should get the DNS server settings from the BT home hub.

Perhaps there is an app running on the device which is changing the settings?

The gateway changing is also odd, do you have any other devices like a wireless extender, which may be responding to DHCP requests?

An old Netgear or similar router perhaps, being used as an extra wireless access point?

Kindle Fire and DNS Message Problem has returned

Go to solution

Think I clicked solved to quickly before as problem returned after a couple of hours. We went into static settings and put in the BT DNS server details and thought that was problem fixed. Completely stumped on what to do now. Sorry for starting new thread but thought nobody would look at the previous one as marked solved.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Many Thanks

Re: Kindle Fire and DNS Message Problem has returned

You have to set the static addresses on a per connection basis. Long click on the wireless network you are connected to on the Kindle and select advanced settings. You can then give the kindle a static IP and DNS address.

Re: DNS Problem/Message stopping Kindle Fire 8 - Thought it was solved but problem back again

Hi Keith, thanks for the quick reply. We don't have any extenders in use so it can't be that. We are just off out to visit someone who has a hub 5 so will try the kindle there and see what happens. I'll redo all the settings again when we get back to ensure everything is correct and report back to this thread. Did start another thread because I didn't think you would check back on this one.

Really grateful for your help,

Many Thanks

As @licquorice has mentioned, perhaps you are connecting to a different wifi connection, as settings only apply to the current connection.

Really odd.

Forgot the network, took it out with us and connected and worked fine with someone else's hub 5. On returning put the wireless key in for our smart hub and reconnected.  Fine at the moment but we'll see! All very odd. I don't find the kindle fire 8 (2015) settings as easy to work with as other devices that we've got. I've got an older kindle that is easier to navigate but it is now soooo slow compared to the newer one!
