Default gateway and DNS explanation/

Go to solution

Hi,

been having some drop out trouble and some strange occurrences on network,  unable to log into router with  192. 168.1.254 in browser( always been anble to)  ,  eventually managed to get in via "Home.htm", and  oddly used a link from one of the forums too -  one kept asking for password after a few minutes inactivity (usual) the  other just stayed "on" , I digress ..................

to cut long story short I've been keeping an eye on Hub Settings via the interface and have just noticed that my default gateway (Home Hub 2) has changed to 172.16.xx.xx    - is this something to be concerned about ?  I beleived it should be 192.168.1.254 ?  - this is what is showing on my devices as the "Router" and IPConfig gives this on desktop.  Why/where etc is the 172. coming from in all this ? is thsi ok?

Also, do  81.139 .57.xxx  sound ok for primary and secondary DNS ?

Your default gateway hasn't changed at all.

192.168.1.254 is the address of the hub and thus the default gateway for your devices.

The 172 address is the BT BRAS and thus the default gateway for the hub.

You can't change the DNS servers on the hub

Try a factory reset of your hub to resolve your other problems
