Default gateway is not available

Recently began using a BT Extender instead of Wi-Fi to connect laptop computer to Home Hub 3. It works well most of the time, but, occasionally it drops the connection to the internet and after using the Network and Sharing Center in Windows 7, and trying to diagnose the problem, it comes up with ''Default gateway is not available''

Sometimes, of course, the problem seems to correct itself after a few minutes. But often I have to restart the computer, and reset the hub and it takes half an hour before I can get back online. Each time there seems to be no reason why everything stopped.

I have a Wi-Fi connected Android phone using the same hub and this NEVER has a problem.

Any ideas?

Re: Default gateway is not available

You could try this and see if it helps, as it applies to Vista, Win7 and 8.

Please check these network settings

Re: Default gateway is not available

Thanks! Have done as you suggest, although why changing the wireless settings should cure a wired connection problem is beyond me. Will let you know if it cures the problem.

Re: Default gateway is not available

You need to do that on the wired interface as well. Just select the TCP properties for the local area network as well, just in case they are different.

Re: Default gateway is not available

I did that too. But currently, after two hours of trouble free service it went down again. After rebooting and running all the desk top help and diagnostics it is still offline. Then suddenly its back again after 20 minutes.

If you're connected to a hotspot or domain network, contact the network administrator. Otherwise: 1. Unplug or turn off the device. 2. After all the lights on the device are off, wait at least 10 seconds. 3. Turn the device on or plug it back into the power outlet. To restart a router or modem that has a built-in battery, press and quickly release the Reset button.
Reset the "Local Area Connection" adapter Completed

This can sometimes resolve an intermittent problem.

Re: Default gateway is not available

Try using manual network setting like this.

IP address 192.168.1.50
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.254
DNS Server 192.168.1.254

That will ensure that the default gateway can always be found.

Hopefully that will fix it. I think the issue is that the home hubs DHCP server, sometimes fails to respond to requests, especially if the internal table is full. The only way to clear this table is with a factory reset, which can be annoying if you have port forwarding rules set up.

Re: Default gateway is not available

It was all going so well....

Then it stopped.  Ran diagnostics.  It said;

Issues found
The default gateway is not available

Investigate router or broadband modem issues Failed
Reset the "Local Area Connection" adapter Completed

DHCP is not enabled for "Local Area Connection Detected
Automatically update your network settings Completed

The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the Internet is broken
The network gateway is accessible, but Windows couldn’t receive network traffic from the Internet. Detected
Your broadband modem is experiencing connectivity issues Not run

The system reset my IP address and reconnected DHCP.

So I reset the hub, and it is now working. The saga continues...
