Do BT make unsolicited calls to customers about computer security?

We received a call from someone claiming to be from BT, telling us that our computer had an infection (different from a virus, apparently!) and inviting us to switch on the computer and follow some instructions.  Assuming that this was a scam, we never got as far as finding out what the instructions would have been.  Has anyone else experienced something similar?  Any possibility it could have been genuine?

None whatsoever. Happens all the time, sometimes they say they are from Microsoft.

NO

the scam works like this.

all they want to do is to offer you help by loading some software remotely to your computer to remove a virus or speed up your BT or whatever waffle they come out with next.

what they are actually doing is hacking your computer with your permission as you have agreed to load their software which then gives them FULL access to all your bank details and also every card number be it debit or credit card stored on your computer.

then every key stroke is recorded and as soon as it sees a 19 digit number enterd it records until you enter the 3 pin security number on the back of the card and within a day your bank has been emptied.

best advice is tell them you havent got a computer and put the phone down. i knew someone who fell victim to this scam and she had her bank account emptied.
