Re: FTTP with a 3rd party router - Speed Issues

@ripface

Indeed John , wireguard is undoubtedly the best.

What's your ram situation as these only have 512MB and if it's tight on memory that might affect things.

Trying to think of settings that might affect speed and can't come up with many.

QoS is an obvious one as is memory usage.

I've got AIprotection turned on with no ill effects.

DNS servers - whose are you using?

Apart from that I'm at a loss.

I'd have a look at the Traffic Analyzer in case there's a device on your network doing things you're unaware of like syncing to a cloud account.

John

Well I have just connected my spare RT-AX82U using the config file from my RT-AX5400 and can confirm that the 82U is more than capable as using the speedtest.net app on my wired PC I get my full 500 up & down. Likewise on my iPhone 11 on the 5GHz band I hit 500/500 as well.

I'd do a full reset having saved my config settings and I'd use the wizard to do a very basic setup with no fancy settings and check the speed.

If that was OK I'd then reload my settings & try again. If not OK then it's going to be a settings issue and I don't think there are many that would affect your speeds so shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

As this is a gaming router do you have any gaming profiles set that might affect things?

Re: FTTP with a 3rd party router - Speed Issues

Hi Tim,

You're a star, thanks for pursuing this for me.  Just to be clear my RT-AX82u is running the latest Gnuton Merlin firmware as that gives me the VPN Client settings.  I'm going to try a factory reset later today, I've already taken a save of the settings just in case.

Thanks again,
John.

@ripface

My 82U is bog standard - current Asus version 3.0.0.4.388_25101 -  & I use the Asus VPN Fusion and have my VPNs in there. I guess that's much the same as the modded firmware gives you.

I'm not sure there's much in the Merlin firmware that's useful for me.

What's amazing me is that the AX5400 settings work perfectly when uploaded to the AX82U and that all my Asus mesh works without any tinkering so the AX82U is a great backup for me.

Re: FTTP with a 3rd party router - Speed Issues

Glad you got something positive out of the testing.  Seems my RT-AX82u does not support VPN fusion so how does your router work with the config from your AX5400?  Maybe VPN Fusion is deprecated with the Merlin firmware?

Cheers,
John.

Re: FTTP with a 3rd party router - Speed Issues

If you went with the stock firmware then VPN Fusion would be there as it is for me.

I'm guessing that if after you've reset & reloaded that you removed the VPN settings from the Merlin config and the updated the firmware to stock that you'd see VPN pages like mine.

And this Fusion page.

This is from my AX5400 but the AX82U looks exactly the same. If all you're using Merlin for is the VPN Client then the stock firmware is best.

Instant Guard is a simple VPN Server from Asus providing you have a public IP address - which I don't btw - and allows remote devices like an iPhone to connect to your home so handy when abroad & you need to do the Lottery or watch BBC iPlayer for example.

Re: FTTP with a 3rd party router - Speed Issues

... So VPN Fusion is just like VPN Client and is available via the stock firmware on the RT-AX82u?

The only reason I went Merlin was for VPN Client support.

Cheers,

John

Re: FTTP with a 3rd party router - Speed Issues

No, the native VPN Fusion feature is not officially supported or built into the firmware of the ASUS RT-AX82U. VPN Fusion requires select higher-end or newer ASUS models.

Not looking good !
