Fibre installation advise - ONS to Router cable run .

Hi Community ,

With reference to Fibre Installation and set up .

I have network in house already and working with BT infinity 1 on copper line .

The Router and master socket for phone is in the most inaccessible place . We had just moved house and the BT engineer did not want to do anything above and beyond what was on his job sheet . To be honest with all stress of moving we just went with it . The  Wi-Fi works has always been poor( distance , steels etc )  , but luckily we have a wired network , so with a couple of access points , I have Wi-Fi as needed .

Question . Will the BT Openreach engineers install the ONT box where would beit more convenient  the for the Householder or should will I expect the same as before ?

my best option to hook up to my network as current , would be for the ONS to be out at the back corner of house on the Ground Floor .
At that point , we already have 2 x RJ45 to connect to the network in house  with network switch etc , so it would easy to link in from new Router with a patch lead .

I was advised the engineers would run a cable yo to 30M before applying any additional charges , I am hoping someone can confirm this for me .

Kind Regards

JC

@jazblue

BT Openreach do not exist, its simply Openreach.

The Openreach technician would normally discuss with you, where you want the ONT fitted, provided its practical.

You can link the ONT and home hub using existing Ethernet cabling if you wish. This would be a WAN connection, so you could not use an Ethernet switch.

Re: Fibre installation advise - ONS to Router cable run .

Hi Keith ,

On the installation videos they show the ONT close to the Router and as you have highlighted this would be a Ethernet connection on LAN/ WAN . I thought WAN is used from ONT to router and then any other connection from the LAN outputs .
Do you think the engineer would run an Ethernet cable from front to back of house from ONT ( cheaper for Openreach ) or could they run fibre to back of house and into the ONT .
I know engineers sometimes hide behind procedures , so just wanted to gather some knowledge .

Openreach will not provide any Ethernet cabling other than a short (~1m) patch lead

The ONT connects to the hub WAN port, you can provide up to 100m of cat5e for this connection

Openreach will site the ONT at your chosen location within reason and assuming it is feasible to run the optical cable there.

Re: Fibre installation advise - ONS to Router cable run .

OK thanks .
So looks my best option is to get them to run the fibre to back of house to out their JB . Then come directly inside house to the ONT .
That should be easy for them to do . The alternative is that they just out it where the original one is . More work for them to do in that case , but at least I now know the options .
The Sales person on BT advised they would run the cable up to 30M , but He may have meant the fibre optic . So that should be ok in my case .
