Google Home Setup on Windows

BT recently decided to send me, free of charge, a Google Home device.

https://shop.bt.com/products/google-home---smart-speaker-ga3a00483a04-D4K5.html

I guess I should be grateful, though so far I've been unable to use it so it has gone back in the box. I'm considering selling it or just giving it away.

But - does anyone have any advice on how to set this up via windows 8.1?

I already tried using two different Android emulators, wasted a lot of time downloading/installing/ testing.  So far - NOTHING. The device is inaccessible, undetected. I don't see any way to use this minimalist hardware which has no controls of its own, but apparently needs some additional hardware in order to function.

According to that page, under the "What You Need" heading, it states:

  • iOS or Android Smartphone/Tablet

BT didn't send me one of those.  I only have Windows 8.1.

Re: Google Home Setup on Windows

Can All Google Home Devices Provide Full Functionality From a PC?

As stated previously, Google Home functionality depends on the method you're using. When using an emulator, you'll be able to use their full functionality. However, when using only your browser, there are certain things you won't be able to do, such as set them up for the first time.

Re: Google Home Setup on Windows

Thanks for attempting to help.

However - "When using an emulator, you'll be able to use their full functionality. " - this does not reflect my experience.

What happened was this. I tried, separately, two different emulators. In neither case was I able to get any functionality whatsoever.  I don't recall the exact message, but it was something like "No Devices Detected" or to that effect.

That is why I'm asking.

Is there any method which users here have tried, and can recommend through direct experience of their own, Using Windows 8.1 as the starting point.

You missed the part which said "there are certain things you won't be able to do, such as set them up for the first time."

You will need to get someone with a smartphone to set it up up gfor you.

Re: Google Home Setup on Windows

I have no objection to cooperating with people I know to attempt to get this thing working.

However, my original conclusion seems confirmed. The device is useless junk since it doesn't have any controls or means of access. I'd certainly rather BT had given  other options, such as a reduction in billing charges, or alternative hardware, rather than sending out unwanted items.

Re: Google Home Setup on Windows

You can access it if your Windows computer has a bluetooth connection, but you cannot set it up without an Android device. I think BT assume everyone has a smartphone or tablet.
