High Ping (500+) when flatmate watches TV

Go to solution

Whenever my flatmate watches TV I get a ridiculous ping that fluctuates between 400 to 600. He uses a Hive Hub, I wondered if that is park of the problem.

I can communcate with friends fine, and my internet speed tests normal, but It's impossible to play any games as I disconnect from the servers instantly.

The router is a Smart Hub and I'm connected to it via an ethernet cable.  I only have ping issues when the TV is on.

Thanks for any advice.

@thedrofevil, It sounds like your flatmate has a smart tv and is streaming via Netflix or similar.

If this is the case, then there's not a whole lot you will be able to do, as the TV's sharing the connection with other devices.

The only option would be to use a third party router which allows you to set a priority and bandwidth limit for users, Price about £40.

You can then give the TV a lower priority, and restrict the bandwidth.

The  BT home hubs do not have that feature.
