Home Hub 2 has started rebooting regularly

Hi folks, wonder if anyone can help me with a problem that just started last week.

I have a Home Hub 2, type A, on firmware 8.1.H.U.  Small home network of two desktop PCs and one laptop, all running Windows 7 64-bit with all latest updates and Microsoft antivirus, plus a BT Vision box, a printer and a NAS.  Connected with a mixture of ethernet cables, wifi and HomePlugs.  Nothing in this setup has changed recently.

Late last week, the Home Hub started rebooting itself every 17 minutes and 28 seconds (judging by the event logs).  All the lights go off, the hub disappears from the network (so effectively the network goes down in its entirety), then slowly the systems come back online, till 4 minutes later broadband is up and working again for another 13 and a half minutes.  This is repeating like clockwork.

From the event logs, all I can see is that it's doing a controlled restart.  Is there any way of finding out what triggered the restart?

I thought the NAS was the most likely culprit, as I've yet to find a reliable one, so I unplugged that, and it's made no difference.

I've also done the BT line test, which reported no problems (though it came back instantly; last time I did one I'm sure it took a while), and the BT speed tester, which reported about 12Mbit/sec down and 0.96Mbit/sec up.

Attached are the event log and the ADSL status.  I'd be really grateful if anyone can offer any advice.

Cheers

Re: Home Hub 2 has started rebooting regularly

Try a factory reset of the home hub.

If that does not fix it, then the home hub if faulty, as it should not keep doing a kernel restart.

There were issues with failing power supply units.

Re: Home Hub 2 has started rebooting regularly

Thanks Keith.  I had assumed it must be a software problem since it was happening at such precisely regular intervals.  However, I bought a replacement cheap off Amazon, swapped the PSU, and now the original hub is working just fine with the replacement power supply!

Re: Home Hub 2 has started rebooting regularly

Excellent Smiley Happy

The home hub 2 power units are not very reliable, and there are many similar reports on this forum.

Many people simply ask for a replacement hub, and end up with the inferior (in my opinion) home hub 3.

Many of these "plug top" switch mode power units simply run too hot, and the internal capacitors fail, resulting in an electrically "noisy" DC feed. This causes re-boots and affects the broadband and wireless as well.

Re: Home Hub 2 has started rebooting regularly

(Win 7)

My home hub 2.0 is doing a KERNEL Warm restart every 4-5 minutes or so but only when I enable the Local Area Connection in the Adapter settings in the Network and Security Centre.

I used to have it connected to broad band where I used to live but now just use it as a router for my home network. When I want to use the internet, I disbale the LAC and enable my wireless network.

I've read in this thread that it might be a power supply unit problem, but it seems to be fine if I don't enable the LAC.

I've hit the Restore to Default button on the side, but thats had no effect.

So could being connected to the LAC cause anything that might be responsible?

Cheers.
