Hub2 device list

I have a couple of entries in my Hub settings that I don't recognise.  They both begin with BTF - one is wireless and the other is ethernet and have the same number, so I'm guessing just one device.  I have nothing wired at the moment, but I assume it could be something I have connected in the past.  Is there any system by which devices are given these numbers in the hub's settings if a name isn't assigned by the user?

Re: Hub2 device list

By 'numbers' do you mean IP address? If so, the hub allocates IP addresses to devices via DHCP. Or do you mean MAC address, in which case it is hard coded to the device.

If the entry is grey it means the device isn't currently connected to the hub and the entry can be deleted  if it is blue it is connected.

Re: Hub2 device list

In 'My Devices' each bit of kit that I have ever connected to the Hub2 is listed - those I recognised I have given a name to make identification easier. I have deleted a couple that I know we no longer have. So I have 'Tom's iPad' ,'Lucy's iphone', 'Dad's laptop' and a few others.  But there are some that I don't recognise, so I have tracked them by MAC addresses.  The symbols/icons allocated by the hub bear no relation to what they actually are until I change them, hence my question about the ones I can't identify.  The downloads since the last time the Hub's interface was last accessed are also listed, and I still have three with 0MB including the two I mention above.  Do the BT digital phones get a mention in this list? I have two of those.

Re: Hub2 device list

Digital Voice handsets don't appear in the list as they don't connect via WiFi.

I have to say I find the device list completely pointless, it is frequently incorrect and serves no useful purpose as far as I can see.

Re: Hub2 device list

Thanks for that; I tend to agree with you about the list. The reason I've been deleting ones I don't use is that they're still being allocated an IP address by the hub, including a  phone I realised had been recycled last summer.  Apparently the fewer devices, the better the connection stability.  So I have a MAC address for the three I can't identify, all apparently out of use. I think I'll erase them and see what happens.

Re: Hub2 device list

I'm not sure deleting items from the list helps, but a factory reset of the hub does.

If you do decide to factory reset the hub, make sure you back up your Digital Voice contacts first as they are stored on the hub and are deleted by a factory reset.

Re: Hub2 device list

Yes, I do a regular backup of my contacts just to be safe.  I've never actually done a total hub reset - does that mean re-connecting everything afterwards?  My hub does like a restart though, and I've done a few of those.  So do all the contacts disappear from the phone after a reset - I wonder how many people don't realise that?  I suppose I'm so used to the old system where they were stored on the handset......

Re: Hub2 device list

Devices will simply reconnect after a factory reset, you may have to re-register the DV handsets to the hub again though.

Contacts are not stored on the handsets and will be deleted by the reset but they can be simply restored from the backup.

Re: Hub2 device list

Mrs Frogmodem suddenly remembered that, a few months back,  our gas engineer asked if he could use our wifi to download his invoice software (mobile data here is very erratic).  So I've deleted the entry which I suspect was him, which just leaves the two devices I have mentioned - identical references but different IP addresses.

Re: Hub2 device list

I'm not sure of the value of simply deleting entries from the list. As far as I'm aware, all that is happening is that the entries are literally just being deleted from the list and nothing else. The DHCP table is not changed by deleting entries.  The only way to clear out the table is a factory reset.
