If you are using a desktop PC, it might be better getting a PCI network card as these have better aerials attached to them. The USB dongles often don't have very good ones in them.

 

Also if you wanted to wire ethernet, you don't need very big holes as you get some cat5 or cat6 cable and run that and then put connectors on the end yourself.

Thanks for this. I didn't know you can get connectors separately (showing my ignorance of these matters!).PCI network cards have beeen suggested by others. Thanks for troubling to get in touch
