Re: Latency Variation (Ping Spikes) during online gaming.

Looks like they are having the same response as 20 pages ago to @h3x1e

Obviously trying to find the source of the issue but not willing to admit they have no idea lmao

Re: Latency Variation (Ping Spikes) during online gaming.

Whelp, i'll keep trying to help find the issue till the end. Whether it be contract end or I help get it fixed.

Just wish more people would be willing to do tests and rule out every single other possible cause before jumping to it being 100% a deeper issue.

Also still waiting for whatever update ISPReview has, Mark said he should have heared back from his BT contacts last week so.

Re: Latency Variation (Ping Spikes) during online gaming.

I've had this issue for a long time now too, and was optimistic it would be fixed with the Smart Hub 2 -- until I saw this thread that is.

I got the Smart Hub 2 setup today and immediately tested a console game while also running the speedtest app on my mobile.

Tested Gears 5 and Rocket League on Xbox One X, and observed ping increase from 25 to 100 during download test, and spike upto 500+ ping during upload test.

Admitedly it's not the best method of testing. I first became aware of the issue when a relative used to stay over years ago, the HH5 was fine for multi usage scenarios and online gaming. It quickly became apparent the Smart Hub (and SH2) are not up to the multi usage tasks of most housegholds. Simple voice and video chats via. Skype while playing games are where I first realised there was a major problem.

I'll probably have to switch as I can't wait around for a Smart Hub 3 hoping BT will have addressed the issue again, I was already waiting in hope of this new model SH2 fixing such issues.

Re: Latency Variation (Ping Spikes) during online gaming.

You're right, that form of testing is not optimal at all, the speed tests will most certainly cause latency increases / spikes.

This also has nothing to do with the Smart Hubs, as you can tell from my thread.

Re: Latency Variation (Ping Spikes) during online gaming.

Got bored, so did a test. This is while watching a YouTube video and one Twitch stream.

Interestingly picked up some packet loss this time (even though it's 0.9% it's stil a loss) on 2 BT nodes.

Re: Latency Variation (Ping Spikes) during online gaming.

I've had a couple of profile updates made by BT and also am now running my hub directly of the master socket.  I have run three ten minute tests tonight whilst idle, streaming All4 and streaming 4k Netflix.  All seems to be much improved.

No streaming

Re: Latency Variation (Ping Spikes) during online gaming.

2.5 second intervals is not short enough - at home we are getting spikes every 1.5-2seconds or less, which is why i posted using 500ms intervals earlier.

Re: Latency Variation (Ping Spikes) during online gaming.

Another one, this time 4k Netflix on the PC.

Maximum burst download speed AFTER the initial buffering was 1.2MB/s however as you can see when it bursts up to 1.2MB/s we get a huge spike in latancy which on this occasion flows down to every hop as seen in the results below.

Re: Latency Variation (Ping Spikes) during online gaming.

Almost forgot a comparrison result when not watching Netflix. Ignore destination ping anything past HOP7 is out of BT's control.
