Most websites showing as insecure connection

I've been having this issue for three days now. Most websites are showing as having an insecure connection - that is, left of the URL bar there is either no secure connection showing or it says "Not secure".

Some websites have the secure padlock, such as Google, Wikipedia, Twitter and my email, while most others do not, including major websites such as BBC, CNN and my bank.

I'm not sure where in the chain this issue is arising, but I thought it worth investigating whether it was an ISP or router issue with my BT Infnity subscription.

The issue appears to be exactly the same using both Chrome and Firefox browsers.

I've run full Malwarebytes and Norton Internet Security scans but they haven't detected anything.

Unfortunately, I do not have a second device to connect to the network check whether the issue is specific to my computer. Also, I haven't taken my computer elsewhere to try to connect to a different internet network.

I had a similar issue a few weeks ago where Google and Youtube were not showing as secure connection, but it had resolved itself by the following day.

Any ideas?

Re: Most websites showing as insecure connection

Only websites using HTTPS will be marked as secure - many websites currently only support HTTP and Google and Firefox are gradually changing their browsers to highlight websites that don't use HTTPS:

Re: Most websites showing as insecure connection

Thanks. If this is the issue, then why aren't I seeing other people mentioning it? I'm a member of a few forums and if other people were experiencing the same issue I would have thought they'd be discussing it. Is anyone else here having the same issue? I would have expected lots and lots of people would be going nuts on the internet if everyone was having this issue.

Also, does that mean these websites would still be safe to use for entering passwords and so on? Or at least the same situation as they were last week, before the insecure connection notifications appeared?

Re: Most websites showing as insecure connection

It's not an 'issue' per se.  Some sites do not need to be secure, like news or just general browsing.  Bank sites, like mine (https://online.tsb.co.uk) display https at the beginning of the address.  Other sites like http://home.bt.com/  will switch to secure when needed as in https://home.bt.com/login.

So it's actually a non issue, nothing to get concerned about.

Re: Most websites showing as insecure connection

This isn't a new "issue" - the browser makers have decided to highlight to users where websites are insecure particularly when it comes to entering your personal information - most users aren't aware of when insecure websites are asking for personal information so this is now being highlighted and at some point I'm sure the browsers will start to warn in big red letters and then ultimately block them completely.  This is the start of a gradual process aimed at forcing the website owners to up their game when it comes to privacy.

Re: Most websites showing as insecure connection

I fail to see the problem.  If the site says https then it's secure.  If it says http then its plain vanilla.  It's up to the user to ascertain his or her security is sufficient rather than rely on a 'Granny State' scenario where people think it's everyone else's responsibility to look after their personal security.  Just look at what people publish on social media sites then they wonder why they have suffered identity theft or similar.

Okay. It just seems a bit strange that no-one else on the internet seems to be talking about this. The top Google result for "insecure connection" this past week is this thread.

Re: Most websites showing as insecure connection

The reason they are not talking about it is because it is not a problem and as has already been explained everything is normal. Only https sites will show as secure, all others will show as insecure.

Re: Most websites showing as insecure connection

Google announced this change some time ago for Chrome and explained it here: https://security.googleblog.com/2016/09/moving-towards-more-secure-web.html?m=1

Other browsers are also adapting these changes, so they'll become increasingly common.

Re: Most websites showing as insecure connection

Hi, I am suffering exactly the same symptoms as yourself and have tried everything I know of to overcome it. I have been on to BT customer care twice to no avail. The last chap I spoke to in Cardiff advised me that he was unable to do a search on his computer and thought it was probably maintenance work going on. Have had this problem for about 4 or 5 days now. I am in the Bognor Regis area and also have BT's fibre optic connection.
